About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) detailing NASA Glenn Research Center's specifications for procuring 3 MgB2 superconducting specimens for AC loss testing. The specimens have specific technical requirements, including heat treatment by the vendor to form MgB2 after achieving the desired conductor geometry, designing for low AC loss under time-varying magnetic and electrical conditions, and ensuring high-quality MgB2 with appropriate engineering critical current density for aircraft propulsion applications.
The SOW specifies detailed requirements for three test specimens, with variations in filament count, barrier material, and sample form. Specimen 1 has 54 filaments with a Nb barrier, a custom 70Cu30Ni sheath for low AC loss, a 0.30 mm diameter, and a short cable form. The vendor must install each specimen into a NASA-provided G-10 coil pack using cryogenic-temperature-tolerant adhesive, ensuring precise geometry and no protrusion above the coil pack's flat face. After installation, the vendor will ship the coil pack back to NASA Glenn for final assembly, with the specimens intended for AC loss testing in electric machine propulsion research.

Specifications for the procurement of 3 MgB2 superconducting specimens with low AC loss for AC loss testing at NASA GRC
7-21-2025
General features of all test specimens
• Specimens must be heat treated by the vendor to react and form the MgB2 after the desired geometry of the conductor is achieved
• The MgB2 and specimen as a whole must be designed for low AC loss when exposed to time varying magnetic and electrical excitation
• The MgB2 must be of high enough quality (stoichiometry, density, etc) such that the engineering critical current density of the conductor is appropriate for electric machines for aircraft propulsion
• The heat treat fixture must yield MgB2 straight cables or racetrack coils with geometry that matches NASA Glenn’s G-10 coil pack for its AC loss test rig
• The vendor will receive from NASA Glenn a G-10 coil pack for each test specimen
• The vendor must install each test specimen into its corresponding coil pack using a small amount of adhesive that is tolerates cryogenic temperatures. The installation must ensure that the conductors closely match the ideal geometry, including ensuring that they do not protrude above the flat face of the G-10 part into which they are adhered
• The vendor will then ship the G-10 coil pack back to NASA Glenn. NASA Glenn will complete the final assembly of the coil pack
