About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirements for a high-power blue laser for the TSM branch at NASA Ames PLASMA Lab. The laser is needed for catalycity measurements of thermal protection materials and arc jet environment experiments, specifically to measure material properties at high temperatures and calibrate copper heat flux sensors. The required laser must have 1-2 kW output power, a center wavelength below 470 nm, wavelength spread under 10 nm, and zoom optics with a 5x variable spot size ranging from 4-8 mm diameter.
The system must include a controller with analog and digital inputs, provide both manual and digital interfaces for power and spot zoom control, and offer output channels for recording power and spot values. The laser should have fiber coupling capabilities and uniform spot intensity with less than 5% variation. The initial installation will be at NASA Ames, but the equipment can be relocated to other testing facilities as needed. Delivery of the laser unit is estimated at 6-12 weeks, excluding installation time.

Statement of Work: High-power Blue Laser
Margaret Stackpoole ; Magnus Haw Code TSM, July 2025
Background
TSM branch is standing up a new apparatus for catalycity measurements of thermal protection materials and various other experiments to study arc jet environments and technologies. This system will need to measure catalycity of various materials, including metals, at high temperature and with precise heating rates. It will also need to calibrate copper heat flux sensors at high heating rates.
Consequently, a high-power laser in the upper visible light range (a blue laser) is needed. High power infrared lasers, while available, exhibit insufficient absorption by metallic surfaces and are not applicable. The recent development of blue high-power lasers has enabled high & precise heating rates of metals using lasers and is of the utmost interest for the division.
The laser should be controllable via digital and analog inputs and provide digital output channels for scanning position and cadence.
The laser shall have the following minimum requirements:
1-2 kW output power Center wavelength < 470 nm Wavelength spread < 10 nm Zoom optics
- Variable spot size: 5x zoom, with min diameter 4-8 mm
- Uniform spot intensity < 5% variation
Controller with analog and digital inputs
Instrument Operation and Data Software
The system shall provide:
o Convenient manual interface for controlling power, spot zoom o Convenient digital interface for controlling power, spot zoom o Output channels for recording of power and spot values o Fiber coupling of laser
Place of Performance
Initial installation of equipment will be at NASA Ames in Code TSM PLASMA Lab but can be moved to other testing facilities as needed.
Delivery
Delivery of the unit is estimated at 6-12 weeks not including installation.
