About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the AURORA Pathfinder project, detailing NASA's requirement for two Electro-Optical Modulators (EOMs) to be fabricated by EOSPACE, Inc. The project stems from the 2017 Earth Science Decadal Survey's recommendation to develop new technologies for probing the Earth's planetary boundary layer, with the specific goal of creating a hyperspectral microwave sensor that can convert radio frequency to optical domain.

The SOW specifies detailed technical requirements for the EOMs, including a Model PM-DV5-60-PFA-PFA-LV-SNA1224 Low Vpi 1550nm Ultra-Broadband Z-cut Lithium Niobate Phase Modulator with extended frequency operation to ~60GHz. Key specifications include an operating wavelength of 1550nm, insertion loss of ~4.5dB, modulation port Vπ of < 4V, and bandwidth of 50 GHz. EOSPACE will perform the work at their facility, with a completion timeline of 8-10 weeks after order signing, and no government-furnished equipment will be provided. The document is dated June 18, 2025, and is version 1.1 of the SOW.

STATEMENT OF WORK

V1.1

June 18, 2025

Background

The 2017 Earth Science Decadal Survey recommended that NASA create a new Incubation Program to explore and develop new technologies to probe the Earth’s planetary boundary layer (PBL) by 2027. In response to this initiative, our team at Goddard Space Flight Center has initiated the development of a hyperspectral microwave sensor, named AURORA Pathfinder.

The AURORA Pathfinder will design and build an instrument that will capture thermal MW spectrum and convert the radio frequency domain into the optical domain for processing. The radio frequency domain conversion to the optical domain is achieved with the use of an Electro-Optical Modulator (EOM). The EOM is a key element in the photonic system.

This procurement is being set up to have the vendor, EOSPACE, provide two EOMs to meet the requirements of the AURORA Pathfinder project.

Scope

EOSPACE is an industry leader in its capability to fabricate EOMs.

EOSPACE will fabricate and provide two Model PM-DV5-60-PFA-PFA-LV-SNA1224 Low Vpi 1550nm Ultra-Broadband Z-cut Lithium Niobate Phase Modulator with extended frequency operation to ~60GHz.

Requirements

• Operating Wavelength: 1550nm

• Insertion loss: ~ 4.5dB

• Modulation Port Vπ (@1GHz): < 4V (-LV version)

• Bandwidth: 50 GHz (usable frequency response to 60GHz with no sharp response dips)

• RF response may be down to ~6dB @ ~60GHz

• S11 (0.13 to 20 GHz): < -10dB

• Internal RF Termination: ½ W (27dBm)

• Optical Return Loss: > 40dB

• Pkg Dimensions: 3.48” x 0.35” x 0.35” (88.4 x 8.9 x 8.9 mm3)

• RF Connector: female 1.85mm (or V-connector)

• Input Fiber: PM, ~1 meter long (900um loose tube)

• Output Fiber: PM, ~1 meter long (900um loose tube)

• Optical Connectors: FC/APC (slow axis aligned to the narrow key)

• SNA1224 Special Specs, December (=12), 2024)
