About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirement for designing and assembling 4690 Li-ion cells to evaluate the effectiveness of metallized polymer current collectors (MPCC) in preventing thermal runaway. The contractor must design and produce three types of 28Ah cells: baseline metal foil current collector cells, cells with aluminum MPCC from Soteria, and cells with aluminum and copper MPCCs from Soteria. NASA requires a total of 50 cells, including 10 control cells and 40 cells with different MPCC configurations, to be delivered within 3 months. The contractor must perform nail penetration testing on a subset of the cells and provide data on cell formation and open circuit voltage (OCV) for all cells.

4690 Li-ion Cells with Metallized Polymer Current Collectors

Statement of Work

1 Apr 2025

1.0 Objective – NASA seeks to determine if high specific energy 4690 Li-ion cells with metallized polymer current collectors (MPCC) in the cathode and anode can isolate internal short circuits enough to prevent thermal runaway.

2.0 Scope – The contractor shall design, assemble, acceptance test, and deliver 4690 Li-ion cells capable of 28Ah with and without MPCCs. The contractor will perform nail penetration test on a subset of cells prior to making delivery to NASA.

3.0 Input Materials – None.

4.0 Tasks – The contractor shall perform the following tasks;

4.1 Design and assemble 4690 cells capable of 28Ah with metal foil current collectors to serve as the baseline for comparison.

4.2 Design and assemble 4690 cells capable of 28Ah with Al MPCC from Soteria.

4.3 Design and assemble 4690 cells capable of 28Ah with Al and Cu MPCCs from Soteria.

4.4 Testing – One cell from items 2 & 3 shall undergo nail penetration testing at the contractor.

These tests shall be performed prior to executing delivery.

4.5 Delivery Table

Item Description ISCD Min Qty Purpose at destination Date

1 4690 control cells No 10 Baseline safety tests 3 months

2 4690 with Al MPCC No 20 Nail penetration tests 3 months

3 4690 with Al and Cu MPCC No 20 Nail penetration tests 3 months

4.6 Data Delivery – The contractor shall provide the results of the brief cell formation and OCV stand for all cells in Table in 4.6.
