About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's procurement for a module to generate calibrated gas-phase standards for trace contaminant control in space exploration. The solicitation is for two Standard FlexStream™ Base Modules, a Standard FlexStream™ Humidified Gas Module, a Standard FlexStream™ Secondary Dilution Module, and an external 0.5 micron filter, all configured to support the ES-62 analytical chemistry equipment used in testing environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) hardware.

The goal is to maintain optimal performance of analytical chemistry equipment by purchasing a calibration module capable of generating humidified NIST certified gas standards at parts per billion (ppb) concentrations. The modules will enable precise calibration of equipment used to monitor trace contaminants in testing chambers, with features including automated permeation systems, touch screen interfaces, remote operation capabilities, digital temperature control, and the ability to generate gas mixtures at variable humidity levels. The procurement is set for a 4-month duration, with the modules to be placed in a customer-supplied expansion cabinet.

NASA Statement of Work

Purchase of a Module to Generate Calibrated Gas-Phase Standards

2 April 2025

MSFC ECLSS Trace Contaminant Control

Monitoring

George C. Marshall Space Flight Center Engineering Directorate, Space Systems Department

INTRODUCTION

Trace contaminant control is a critical life support function in space exploration. ES-62 monitors trace contaminants in testing chambers using analytical chemistry equipment to evaluate developmental ECLSS hardware. The analytical chemistry equipment that monitors the trace contaminants is calibrated using certified NIST calibrated gas standards generated from the modules to assist in obtaining accurate results. Failure to calibrate the analytical chemistry equipment will result in inaccurate data.

PROCUREMENT GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Goal

The goal of this procurement is to maintain optimal performance of the analytical chemistry equipment in the laboratory by purchasing a calibration module that can accurately generate humidified NIST certified gas standards at ppb concentrations.

TASKS AND ASSOCIATED COST

The following tasks are required for this purchase.

Total Cost and Tasks Breakdown.

TASK DESCRIPTION DURATION

Task 1 Modules for NIST certified sample generation 4 months

SCOPE OF WORK (4 months)

Task 1. Delivery of modules to generate humdified NIST certified gas samples.

DELIVERABLES (4 months)

1.) Two Standard FlexStream™ Base Modules, 115VAC/60Hz. Automated permeation system with touch screen interface for controlling operating modes, temperature, and dilution flow. Features remote operation if connected to a user supplied PC running FlexLink™ software (included). Automatically calculates and sets flows required to achieve output concentration based on permeation tube information used. Teflon® output tubing provides inert path for most chemicals. Standard dilution flow range of 0.25 to 5.0 slpm is controlled and measured through a MFC (N2 or Air carrier). Digital temperature control from 5° C above ambient to 150° C in 0.1°C increments. Placed in a portable single module cabinet. Uses disposable permeation tubes and liquid filled refillable permeation tubes and works with other FlexStream modules. Comes with glass permeation tube adapter bottle, 57H/LFH and 57S adapters, and operating manual.

NOTE: To be placed into a customer supplied expansion cabinet with Base Module (line item 1) and Secondary Dilution Module (line item 3).

2.) Standard FlexStream™ Humidified gas Module, 115VAC/60Hz. An automated humidification module that connects to and works with the FlexStream™ Base Module to add a variable level of humidity to trace concentration gas mixtures created by upstream modules. Contains internal %RH/Temperature (°C) sensor to display Span as RH at operating conditions and an external %RH/Temperature (°C) sensor that provides an automated feedback signal for controlling flows needed to maintain calibration gas concentration at desired %RH. Equipped with an internal MFC (0.25 to 5.0 slpm) to control wet gas flow ratio with dry calibration gas flow for final humidified Span gas mixture output (calibrated for use with Nitrogen or Air). Comes with operating manual.

Can be placed in a single module cabinet or expansion cabinet with other modules.

Requires safe vent connection for excess gas. NOTE: To be placed into a customer supplied expansion cabinet with Base Module (line item 1) and Secondary Dilution Module (line item 3).

3.) Standard FlexStream™ Secondary Dilution Module, 115VAC/60Hz. Works with FlexStream™ Base Module to provide Secondary Dilution of concentration ranges down to sub-ppb or pptr levels. Also allows variable concentrations at a fixed output flow.

Equipped with a high purity MFC to allow 10-100 sccm of calibration gas to be diluted further by a Secondary Dilution MFC (range 0.25 - 5.0 slpm, N2 or Air) for diluting primary standard from Base Module. Designed to work with other FlexStream™ modules. Provides access to all functions available through the FlexStream™ software.

Requires safe vent connection for excess gas. NOTE: To be placed into a customer supplied expansion cabinet with Base Module (line item 1) and Humidification Module (line 2).

4.) External 0.5 Micron filter with ¼” connections.
