About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for a federal contract opportunity. The objective of the contract is for NASA to acquire a temperature and strain measurement technology using fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) that reduces weight and space on aerospace vehicles. The SOW specifies the required characteristics of the optical fiber and FBGs, including single-mode 125um fiber, 1550nm nominal center wavelength, polyimide coating, and 1-cm spaced low-reflectivity FBGs. The testing for this contract will be conducted at the Flight Loads Laboratory at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center during fiscal years 2024 and 2025.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation (Solicitation Number: 80NSSC24870577Q) issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center for the purchase of single-mode fiber with Bragg grating. This is a brand-name requirement.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Objective/Requirements NASA desires a temperature and strain measurement technology that reduces weight and space on Aerospace vehicles. Distributive measurements using fiber Bragg gratings (fs-FBGs) is currently the best promise to increase sensor density and reduce weight of structural instrumentation.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs Specification of optical fiber and fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs):

• Single Mode 125um, low bend loss optical fiber

• Nominal FBG center wavelength at 1550-nm,

• Polyimide coated (4X, nominal 162-micron total fiber thickness)

• Low reflectivity FBGs (for Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry)

• 1-cm spaced FBGs

3. Place of Performance

Testing to be conducted in the Flight Loads Laboratory at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center

4. Period of Performance Testing shall be performed during FY24 and FY25
