About this file

This document outlines requirements for a liquid-nitrogen-cooled regolith simulant bed for thermal vacuum testing at NASA Glenn Research Center. The scope involves designing, fabricating, and pressure testing a shallow bin to hold lunar regolith simulant and chill it to liquid nitrogen temperatures under vacuum conditions. Key requirements for the soil bin include interfacing with a vacuum chamber via a 33x37.5 inch bolt pattern, provisions for embedded thermocouples, construction from 6061 aluminum with embedded copper liquid nitrogen lines, containment of 650 pounds of regolith simulant, overhead crane lifting capability, and pressure testing the liquid nitrogen plumbing to 100 psi. The bin must be delivered by April 30, 2024. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 80NSSC24857074Q from the NASA Shared Services Center to procure a custom cold plate and soil tray assembly for thermal vacuum chamber VF-13 to meet the stated requirements.

Statement of Work

Liquid-Nitrogen-Cooled Regolith Simulant Bed for Dirty Thermal Vacuum Testing Under Approximate Lunar Surface Conditions

Expanding NASA Glenn Research Center’s In-Situ Resource Utilization Testing Capabilities

December 2023

Introduction/Background:

NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) is seeking a Vendor to quote the design, fabrication, and pressure testing of a shallow bin that can hold lunar regolith simulant and chill it to liquid nitrogen temperatures under vacuum to emulate thermal conditions on the lunar surface. This test fixture will be installed in one of GRC’s dirty thermal vacuum chambers to enable testing for various internal and external In-Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU) and surface mobility testing efforts. The soil bin is intended to supplement existing test capabilities by enabling larger-scale soil thermal and mechanical soil interactions with various test articles under vacuum.

Scope:

The design and construction of the soil bin is open-ended so long as the requirements outlined below are satisfied. It is the responsibility of the Vendor to ensure that all requirements are met.

GRC should be consulted with any questions that arise to ensure requirements are properly understood and applied.

Requirements:

1. The soil bin will interface with the chamber via four ½” diameter bolt holes on a rectangular 33” x 37.5” pattern.

2. The bottom surface of the inside of the soil tray, where the regolith will be poured, must be uninterrupted and free of holes.

3. The soil bin base shall have provisions for 4 embedded thermocouples at varying radial locations

4. The soil bin walls shall have provisions for 4 embedded thermocouples at varying heights

5. The walls and base of the soil bin shall be made from 6061 aluminum

6. Liquid nitrogen cooling of the base will be achieved by embedded copper lines in the underside of the soil bin base

7. ¾” VCR fittings will be used at the inlet and outlet of the LN2 lines

8. The outer diameter of the entire assembly shall not exceed 48”

9. The walls of the soil bin shall be 6” tall

10. The fixture shall be thermally isolated from the chamber with insulating standoffs at least

6” tall at each of the four bolt hole locations

11. The soil bin must be capable of containing 650 lbs of regolith simulant

12. The assembly will have provisions for overhead crane lifting capable of supporting the weight of the fixture plus an additional 650 lbs with a minimum safety factor of 5

13. Hardware to be assembled and verified in compliance with AS9100.

14. The LN2 plumbing will be pressure tested to 100 psia prior to delivery

15. All surfaces must be cleaned of grease, oil, and debris prior to packaging for shipment

16. All hardware must be bagged and/or wrapped for protection during shipment.

17. GRC will take delivery of the shipped soil bin assembly no later than April 30, 2024
