About this file

This statement of work outlines requirements for the fabrication of oscillating heat pipes for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration project. The contractor shall fabricate parts from Inconel 625 additive manufacturing material to the specifications provided in the drawings, delivering quantities of each part number listed by January 2024. The technical requirements specify the contractor's experience and certifications as well as fabrication standards for density, build method, stress relief, and removal from the build plate. Induction heating equipment will be provided by the government for quality checks. The period of performance is from December 2023 through final deliveries in January 2024.

1.0 Background

Requirements of next generation commercial Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and Department of Defense

DOD hypersonic vehicles, dictate the need for robust thermal management solutions. Recent advancements in refractory additive manufacturing technology make available novel integrated thermal management systems capable of operating at extreme temperatures. One such system, Oscillating Heat Pipes (OHP’s), are a potentially disruptive technology to a wide range of NASA applications. NASA Ames Research was recently selected to advance OHP’s for commercial leading-edge applications in partnership with Lockheed Martin through an Announcement of

Collaboration Opportunity (ACO). This project is called the Oscillating Heat Pipe for Aero-entry and Commercial Applications (OHPACA).

2.0 Purpose and Scope

The purpose of this Statement of Work (SOW) is to fabricate parts in support of OHPACA project.

3.0 Project Structure

The contractor shall provide all labor, materials, facilities, service, equipment, analysis and management necessary to fabricate hardware defined in section 4.0.

4.0 Contract Line-Item Numbers

The effort described by this SOW shall be completed when all subcontract Contract Line Item Numbers (CLINS), defined in Table 1, are complete. As shown in the drawings, there are also some post-AM details that we require – reaming/drilling/machining of the heater and fill tube holes.

6.0 Description of Tasks and Technical Requirements

6.1 Description of Tasks

Vendor is to fabricate quantity of parts per drawings specified in Table 1. As shown in the drawings, there are also some post-AM details required. Specifically, reaming/drilling/machining of the heater and fill tube holes. It should also be noted that drawings are agnostic to build orientation. Necessary scaffolding, supports, or roof structures to channels can be added pending approval of the technical POC on the NASA side. Finalized drawings with modifications will be worked with vendor upon contract award.

6.2 Technical Requirements

Technical requirements are documented below:

• Vendor shall have previous experience with additively manufactured Inconel 625 heat pipe casings that have been demonstrated to be capable of being hermetically sealed.

• Vendor shall have previous experience removing powder from very high aspect ratio channels

• Vendor shall be certified to ISO 9001:2008, or better.

• Vendor shall fabricate parts above 99% density.

• Vendor shall fabricate parts in a single build

• Vendor shall stress relieve parts

• Vendor shall remove parts from the build plate after stress relief using EDM

• Vendor shall minimize restarts during the additive manufacturing process.
