About this file

This statement of work outlines requirements for femtosecond laser written fiber Bragg gratings. NASA seeks to develop a temperature and strain measurement technology using distributed fiber optic sensors to reduce weight and space needs on hot structures and small reentry vehicles. The scope involves obtaining optical fiber with at least 99.95% gold purity and femtosecond laser writing fiber Bragg gratings within specified parameters directly onto the gold fiber. Laboratory testing of the developed technology would take place at NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center during fiscal year 2024.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Objective/Requirements NASA desires a temperature and strain measurement technology that reduces weight and space on hot-structures and ultimately on small reentry vehicles.

Distributive measurements using femtosecond laser written fiber Bragg gratings (fs- FBGs) is currently the best promise. This technology allows multiple measurements on a single fiber reducing strain gage and thermocouple leadwires.

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs

Optical fiber and fs-FBG requirements:

• 99.9% gold on best effort basis.

• Recoating none

• The gold purity >= 99.95%

• SM1250 (10.4/125) Gold fiber The FBG is with below Spec:

o CW= 1550 +/- 1 nm o Ref>40% BW<0.5 nm o SLSR>10db o FBG length: around 5 mm o FBG position: 1m gold fiber position o FBG: around 0.7m-FBG-0.3 m of 1 m

3. Place of Performance

Testing to be conducted in Flights Loads Laboratory at NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center.

4. Period of Performance Laboratory testing shall be performed during FY24
