About this file

This revised statement of work describes requirements for procuring a tube bender, associated software, and tooling for the Goddard Space Flight Center. The tube bender must be capable of bending titanium tubing up to 0.5 inches in diameter and 0.035 inches thick, with a minimum bending capability of 0.125 inch diameter aluminum, stainless steel, nickel, and titanium tubing. It must have low pressure alarm, repeatability of +/-0.002 inches in length and +/-0.1 degrees in rotation and angle, bend arm rotation of 190 degrees, input power of 120V or 240V, and autonomously rotate the tube to perform bends in different planes without requiring mandrels. The minimum tube length is 3 times the diameter, minimum distance between tubes is also 3 times the diameter, maximum tube length that can be fed is 20 feet, and maximum bend angle is 135 degrees. The associated software must provide 3D views of the tube to be bent, convert STEP files to a format usable by the software, create bend tables from imported STEP files, compensate for springback and extrusion, operate if the pressure die is too short, and perform multiple bends inside the pressure die. The statement of work also requires supply of bending die tooling in various tube diameter and bend radius sizes listed in Table 1, to be compatible with and not dependent on the wall thickness of the supplied tube bender.

INTRODUCTION

1.1 GENERAL INFORMATION

The Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) builds propulsion and other fluid systems in support of spacecraft. Tube bending machines are necessary to bend stainless steel, titanium, and other tubes for the manifolds that are a part of these fluid systems.

1.2 SCOPE

This document gives requirements for the procurement of a tube bender, associated software, and tooling.

1.3 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

N/A

2 STATEMENT OF WORK

2.1 TUBE BENDER

The vendor shall supply a tube bender with the following capabilities.

Capable of bending Titanium tubing with a maximum diameter of 0.5” and wall thickness of 0.035” (Note: This defines the minimum requirement for the maximum bending capability, our shop will bend Aluminum, Stainless Steel, Nickel, and Titanium at various tube thicknesses from 0.125” diameter to 0.5” diameter tubing)

Low pressure alarm

Machine repeatability: Length +/-0.002”, Rotation +/- 0.1 degrees, Angle +/- 0.1 degrees

Bend arm rotation: Maximum 190 degrees

Input Power: 120V or 240V (not necessary to provide both)

Autonomously rotate tube to perform bends in different planes

The machine shall not require the use of mandrels

Minimum tube length: 3x the tube diameter

Minimum distance between tubes: 3x the tube diameter

Maximum tube length that can be fed into the machine: 20 feet

Maximum bend angle: 135 degrees

The vendor shall provide with the tube bender software that has the following capabilities:

Ability to show a 3D view of tube to be bent

Ability to convert ISO 10303 standard 3D STEP files into a format the tube bender software can use to create tube bending tables

Ability to create bend tables from imported 3D STEP file

Ability to compensate for springback and extrusion

Ability to operate the machine to overcome a pressure die that is too short

Ability to operate the machine to perform more than one bend inside the pressure die

The vendor shall provide any needed support to install the software onto a customer supplied computer at the customer’s facility if software is not already installed on the tube bending machine. The customer will provide the computer and technicians to do the software install, if needed.

2.2 TOOLING

The vendor shall supply the bending die tooling in Table 1. The bending die tooling shall not be dependent on the tube wall thickness; instead, the strength of the tooling shall be set by the capability of the tube bending machine supplied as part of this SOW. The tooling shall be compatible with the tube bender supplied as part of this SOW. Note: Per Section 2.1, solutions with mandrels do not meet the requirements.

Table 1. Tooling Sizes.

Tool Number (only for tracking purposes)

Tube Diameter for Die (inches)

Collet Bend Radius (inches)

1 0.125 0.375

2 0.125 0.500

3 0.250 0.750

4 0.250 1.000

5 0.375 1.250

6 0.375 1.500

7 0.500 1.500

8 0.500 2.000

2.3 EVALUATION

The solution proposed by the vendor shall meet the requirements in this document. In addition, the solution proposed by the vendor shall be evaluated as best value on the following criteria:

Maximum tube length: Solutions that allow bending of longer tubes will be rated higher.

Minimum tube length: Solutions that allow bending of shorter tubes will be rated higher

Minimum length between bends: Solutions that allow shorter distances between tube bends will be rated higher.

Maximum bend angle: Solutions that allow a larger maximum bend angle will be rated higher.

Minimum distance between bends: Solutions that exceed the requirements in Section

2.1 will be rated higher.

Useability: The vendor shall provide screenshots of the software provided as part of this quote to allow the government to evaluate useability of the software. Solutions that require users to use command line or that display low quality images will be rated lower.

Upgradability: The vendor shall provide a list of upgrades that can be done on the machine and indicate whether the upgrades would require the machine to be sent back to the manufacturer or whether the upgrades could be made on-site. Upgrades will be evaluated based on the government’s forecasted needs.

Software Features: The vendor shall provide a list of all the software features provided by their solution, along with descriptions. Solutions that contain software features useful to the government will be rated higher.
