Statement of Work:

Development of Spike Ejector Technology

Fabrication and Testing of Aerodynamic Prototypes

Purpose: Engineers at NASA Stennis Space Center are investigating the adaptation of SSC’s spike diffuser technology to mass ejection and vacuum generation applications. The purpose of this project is to acquire air-driven aerodynamics data for spike ejectors as a precursory step toward steam testing.

Scope: NASA will provide hardware designs for three ejector prototypes as well as a 500-liter vacuum chamber to aid in mass ejection measurements.

The contractor will be responsible for the fabrication of the three NASA-designed ejectors, including motive nozzles. Nozzle components are to be fabricated of 400-series stainless steel treated with a low-thermal-conductivity barrier coating. Diffuser components may be constructed of aluminum. The dimensional envelope of each ejector is expected to be constrained to 610 mm length by 305 mm diameter. As-built dimensions will need to be measured and reported.

The contractor will also be responsible for the design and construction of all systems required to support ejector testing. This includes piping and instrumentation, propellant acquisition and humidity control, test stand operation, exhaust management, etc.

Instrumentation sufficient to measure system mass flows, thermodynamic states, and aerodynamic test article performance will be required. The contractor shall be prepared to supply multiple steady feeds of dry air to the ejector test article interfaces at specified conditions.

Summary of Expected Testing: Approximately two hundred tests will be required to fully evaluate the aerodynamic performance of the ejector test articles. These will notionally be spread over three weeks.

Requirements:

Interface pressure setpoint range : 0.3-1.7 MPa

Maximum allowable deviation from setpoint : ± 2.5 %

Interface temperature setpoint range : 300-500 K

Maximum allowable deviation from setpoint : ± 5 K

Maximum flow rate : 2.0 kg/s

Minimum test duration capability : 60.0 s

Maximum back pressure on test article : 0.11 MPa

Minimum number of ejector test article sensors : 8

Minimum data sample rate : 100 Hz

Data file format : comma-separated values (CSV)

Deliverables:

- Facility piping and instrumentation diagram.

- Test readiness review.

- Aerodynamics test data.

- Comprehensive final report summarizing all test-related activities.

- Return of all government-owned hardware to NASA SSC.

Work Location: Contractor Facilities

Performance Period: January 1, 2022 – September 30, 2022

Deliverables Schedule: The contractor shall provide a brief formal status update on a monthly basis, with informal discussions to be held as needed. Hardware shall be fully assembled and activated at the contractor facility by the end of May 2022. A test readiness review shall be delivered upon completion of system activation. Subsequent aerodynamics testing shall be conducted before or during July 2022. A final report shall be delivered detailing all tests conducted including flow process and instrumentation diagrams. The contractor is responsible for packaging, insuring, and shipping all government-owned hardware to Stennis upon completion of testing.

Reference Documents:

- Technical drawings of the vacuum chamber

Quality Assurance: The Contract Administrator and government reserve the right to inspect all work at all times during and upon completion of fabrication and to witness any or all tests. The contractor shall cooperate fully to enable the COR or government designated representative to be present at the performance of any or all tests and any other activity as specifically requested. The contractor shall furnish all equipment and materials for all tests except where stated otherwise. The contractor shall notify the COR one month prior to performance of any and all tests.
