80NSSC21773574Q R-2 Questions

1. your size is 1 inch to 1.125” diameter rod. Is it your intention to have these cast to this size or do expect ingot to be melted and hot worked?

A1: The ingots should be cast to size, 1 inch to 1.125” diameter.

2. our small VIM as noted below can pour round or book molds.

A2: Not a question. But note that each separate alloy should be composed of a single master heat, not multiple smaller heats of similar composition.

3. does product require a FINAL chemistry analysis or is it based on input?

A3: A final ingot chemistry is required for each alloy and should be supplied by a third party.

4. What analysis tests are required A4: Final ingot chemistry of all constituents plus Ca, Mg, Ti, and Al impurity levels.

4.5 what is the alloy tolerance required for the chemistry listed A4.5: Alloy tolerance is ±1% on all elemental constituents and total Ca + Mg + Ti + Al should be less than 50 ppm. In addition, non-metallic inclusions should be minimized and less than 10 microns in size.

5. what surface finish is expected on the diameter A5: There is no surface finish requirement on the diameter of the ingot.

6. the volume noted , what is the expectation on length, ONE piece, or multiple pieces.

A6: There is no expectation on length. A single piece is acceptable or multiple pieces of generally no less than 6 inches.

7. what is the tolerance on the volume A7: There is no tolerance on volume but the ingots should not contain gross voids, pipe, or other areas of non-fill.

8. what is the density requirement. A VIM ingot will have HOT top issues and some center line void. This can be closed by HIP or HOT work. to smaller sizes. But this not necessary if metal is for powder atomization A8: Properly cast, VIM ingots do not have hot-top issues or center line voids. Center line voids are not acceptable.

If you are unsure that you can meet the associated requirements you can send (at company expense) a 6lb. test/evaluation heat of item #1 for evaluation to NASA GRC for determination of suitability.
