About this file
This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) file for solicitation 80GRC025Q0001, focused on turbine air motors (TAMs) for NASA's Ames Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel. The Q&A provides critical technical specifications for potential vendors, including operational requirements such as intermittent use (maximum 16 hours per day), high-pressure air supply specifications (3,000 psi, up to 80 pounds per second), and environmental conditions. The facility offers a one-megawatt moveable heater that can preheat air, and maintains a standard humidity tolerance of 500-800ppm using make-up air systems with dryers.
The document explicitly states that electric motors are not being considered for this procurement. Additional technical details, including mounting orientation and output shaft configuration, are referenced in Attachment A of the Request for Quote (RFQ). Vendors are directed to a NASA website for more information about the 11-by-11 foot wind tunnel test section where these turbine air motors will be used. The temperature in the tunnel is noted to be approximately 10 degrees Fahrenheit above ambient, with no temperature control in the closed circuit but an aftercooler present in the system.

80GRC025Q0001 Questions and Answers:
1. Duty cycle (continuous or intermittent use?)
The intended operation of the TAMs is Intermittent use; no more than 16 hours per day.
2. Mounting orientation and space limitations
See Attachment A in the RFQ for mounting orientation and space limitations.
3. Air supply specs (pressure and flow available)
High-pressure air (3,000 psi) is available at weight flows to 80 pounds per second through dual, independently regulated lines ending within the support strut. A one-megawatt, moveable heater can preheat air from one of these lines. Preheated air at 60 pounds per second is available at the turntable.
4. Preferred output shaft configuration (if any)
See Attachment A in the RFQ for shaft information.
5. Environmental conditions (temperature, moisture, etc.)
Temperature is dependent on the test conditions. Operational observation the tunnel total temp is on average ~10-deg°F above the outside ambient temperature. There is no way to control temperature in the closed circuit but there is an aftercooler in the circuit.
The standard humidity tolerance used for data taking is 500-800ppm. The facility has make-up air systems with dryers so all air supplied is dry. The facility has the ability to exchange air with dry air to purge the system and get within the tolerance.
Additional information about the wind tunnel test section where the turbine air motors will be used can be found at this link: https://www.nasa.gov/nasa-ames-unitary-plan-wind-tunnel/ames-unitary-plan-wind-tunnel-11-by-11-foot-twt-test-section/
6. Are you entertaining electric motors?
No
a. If so, do you expect the vendor to supply all necessary ancillary equipment, i.e. motor drives, cooling system, etc?
N/A
7. If so, what voltage and current is available?
N/A
