Attachment 1: STATEMENT OF WORK
80GRC019Q0005
TITLE OF PROJECT: Aqueous, Quick‐charging Battery Integration for Electric Flight Research (AQUIFER) Rim Driven Motor Design and Motor Prototypes
PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: May 15, 2019 through June 15, 2020
BACKGROUND:
The Convergent Aeronautics Solutions (CAS) Aqueous, Quick‐charging Battery Integration for Electric Flight Research (AQUIFER) effort is focused on determining the feasibility of a nano‐electrofuel flow (NEF) battery integrated with an advanced rim‐driven motor for electric propulsion on aircraft. If proven feasible, the concept has the potential to significantly improve noise and safety. In order to proceed, there is need for a motor to be designed to system specifications due to the lack of currently available machines. This task seeks to procure the needed motors, control systems, and designs.
TASK DESCRIPTION:
The work to be completed in this task should include providing a final concept design for a rim‐driven motor, bearing, and fan system capable of meeting, as close as possible, the requirements set for under the AQUIFER effort, as shown below.
1.1 Performance Requirements
a. The motor should be capable of operating at a steady state shaft power of 6.1 kW and peak power of 7.4 kW at 9000 rpm.
b. The motor should be capable of operating steady state at 9000 rpm.
c. The motor should provide a minimum of 7.7 Nm of peak torque.
d. The motor should have a minimum efficiency of 90% at 100 VDC bus voltage at 9000 rpm.
1.2 Electrical Requirements
a. The motor operating voltage ranging from 12 ‐ 110 VDC.
b. The motor should have a no‐load spin of 12V @ 1.5A, the power output of a nano‐electrofuel
(NEF) battery.
1.3 Mechanical and Structural Requirements
a. The motor outer diameter should not exceed 18”
b. The motor inner diameter shall not be less than 14”
c. The motor, fan, and bearing system should be less than 3 kilograms.
d. The motor shall utilize a ring design, driven at the outer diameter of the fan.
e. The fan blades can operate up to 9000 rpm.
1.4 Interface Requirements
a. The motor should provide a structural interface for mounting a nano‐electrofuel battery and low‐noise fan blades.
b. A control system must be provided that can operate the motor at the above voltages, currents, torque and rpm requirements.
SCOPE OF WORK:
The deliverables outlined below include design documentation sufficient to verify the electrical and structural design, and pass design reviews.
The vendor must coordinate with both NASA and battery/integration sub‐contractors to maintain compatibility as detailed design requirements evolve.
