SOLAS 7M RIB
Test Planning – Crane Involvement
Crane Test Logistics
• Seeking crane lift insight for the following test
– Righting Test
– Seating Strength Test
– Drop Test
– Impact Test
– Overload Test
Desired Test Location
• NOB V47, 1052 Pocahontas St.
Righting Test
• Procedure: The rescue boat should be loaded with its equipment. Fuel tanks should be flooded or filled to the final waterline resulting from this test.
– Craft Load Condition: ~4350 lbs. (Full Fuel, No Personnel)
– Crane will be used to invert/flip the RIB
– Righting bag will be activated to demonstrate righting (Additional procedure information on next slide)
• Environmental Mitigations
– Remove the inboard engine and replace with ballast.
– Empty the fuel tank and fill with water to represent the weight of full fuel.
– To the extent possible remove all operational fluids and replace the approximate weight with ballast.
– If possible, remove all equipment that will be damaged by submergence and replace associated weights with ballast.
– Prepare an oil boom around the test site.
– Ensure clean up material is available and on standby.
– Prepare facility pump to remove flooded water after the test
Righting Test
• Crane Rigging
– Connect two hoisting lines on the side of the boat (bow and stern), where the loop goes under the hull of the boat. The crane operator will then come up on the hoisting lines to turn the boat upside down.
– The righting bag on the craft’s aft arch will be activated to invert/right the craft https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggNx7G6i664 [3]
Hoisting Lines
Seating Strength Test
• Procedure: The seating should be loaded with a mass of 100 kg in each position allocated for a person to sit in the rescue boat. Each type of seat should be loaded with a mass of 100 kg in any single seat location when dropped into the water from height of at least 3 m.
– Craft Load Condition: ~5,800 lbs.
– Crane will be used to lift the craft 3m above the surface of the water
– A quick release between the boat slings and crane rigging will be activated, dropping the craft into the water (Additional procedure information on next slide)
Seating Strength Test
• Rigging
– Connect a hoisting line to the craft. Connect two guiding lines (bow and stern) to keep the boat inline. The crane operator will then come up on the hoisting line until the boat is at least 3 meters above the surface of the water. Once the boat is at the desired dropping height, the quick release will be activated from the pier.

Drop Test
• Procedure: The rescue boat, complete with all its equipment, should be dropped three times from a height of at least 3 m on to water. The drops should be from level trim, 45-degree bow-down, and 45-degree stern-down attitudes.
– Craft Load Condition: 5,800 lbs. (Maximum Full/Hoisting Load)
– Crane will be used to lift the craft 3m above the surface of the water
• Sling baskets (sling extenders) may be used to achieve desired trim
– A quick release between the boat slings and crane rigging will be activated, dropping the craft into the water
Drop Test
• Rigging
– Connect a hoisting line to the craft. Connect two guiding lines (bow and stern) to keep the boat inline. The crane operator will then come up on the hoisting line until the boat is at least three meters above the surface of the water. Once the boat is at the desired dropping height and the boat is inline, the quick release will be activated from the pier.
– Three lifts and drops will be required. Different boat slings may be used to achieve desired craft trim.

Impact Test
• Procedure: The rescue boat, in a free hanging position, should be pulled laterally to a position so that when released it will strike a fixed rigid vertical surface at a velocity of 3.5 m/s. The boat should be released to impact against the rigid vertical surface. Skates or fenders, if required, should be in position.
– Craft Load Condition: 5,800 lbs. (Maximum Full/Hoisting Load)
– Use crane 1 to lift the craft
– Use crane 2 / winch to pull the craft laterally (rigging will include a quick release)
• Craft will be pulled laterally until a height of approximately 2 feet above the craft’s starting position is achieved
– Activate the quick release to release crane 2 / winch rigging

Overload Test
• Procedure: The rescue boat should be loaded with a properly distributed load of four times the weight to represent the equipment and full complement of persons each weighing 82.5 kg for which it is to be approved and suspended for 5 minutes from its bridle or hooks.
– Craft Load Condition: ~10,165 lbs. (Four times equipment and personnel weight)
– Ballast the craft to achieve the desired load out
– Complete a single point lift and hold the lift for 5 minutes
