Helping to lead the way towards medical discoveries that improve people's health and save lives, the NIH scientist investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases. Composed of twenty-seven (27) Institutes and Centers (IC’s), the NIH provides leadership and financial support to researchers in every state and throughout the world.

The NIH Bethesda Central Utility Plant at the National Institutes of Health is capable of generating 800,000 pounds per hour (lb/hr) of saturated steam at 165 pounds per square inch gauge (psig), 60,000 tons of chilled water at 42 degrees Fahrenheit, 6600 cubic feet per minute (CFM) of compressed air for distribution to the campus. The CUP consists of five (5) dual-fired (primary-gas/secondary-ultra low sulfur number 2 diesel oil) saturated steam boilers, twelve (12) 5000 ton chillers, and two (2) 1800 CFM and one (1) 3000 CFM air compressors, and various types of supporting auxiliary systems in the CUP which include pumps, electrical switchgear, generators, reverse osmosis (RO), chemical feed systems.
