Questions and Answers

1. Where did you derive the 30‐ minute average runtime from? In our experience, the largest 35mm reels (2000ft) will run about 22 minutes at 24fps. Please provide approximate footage measurements of the items, in order to accurately predict the average runtime which will allow more accurate estimates.

A1 ‐ The 30 ‐ minute runtime is more accurate for 16 mm. Our longer 35 mm titles consist of multiple reels per title, each reel likely closer to the 20‐minute runtime you mention. Silent films may be 18fps. We have not selected the films yet, so cannot give footage measurements.

2. Will you be able to clearly identify the films with multiple copies that you will want us to select between for digitization? How many films do you estimate will be included which will NOT be scanned because there is a duplicate?

A2 ‐ Yes, we will identify. Films inspected but not scanned will probably number fewer than 10.

3. How many films do you believe have separate audio and image elements which will need to be synchronized?

A3 ‐ Very few, perhaps 5.

4. In the table for 35mm film specifications, the "resolution" field requests 2.5K files for the Preservation and Mezzanine, but the "frame size" field requests 5120x3840 resolutions for those same files. Which one is correct?

A4 ‐ The correct frame size is 5120x3840. The specs for 35 mm have been revised for clarity and reposted.

5. For 35mm film, we can only show about half of the perforation area of the film on either side of the frame.

A5 ‐ This is okay. We would like edge‐to‐edge overscan as much as possible, with a preference to skew towards the soundtrack area.

6. Question regarding Mezzanine files, specifically regarding the request for them to be over‐scanned but also color corrected. This is unusual combination, since overscans are generally not meant for viewing?

A6 ‐ Our mezzanine/production files are often provided to library patrons seeking copies of films for documentary and other film/video projects. Files that are professionally color‐corrected but also overscanned so that patrons can crop as they prefer seem to be the most desirable format. This only applies to films that demonstrate dye fading, typically 16 mm.

7. Could you please confirm the address where the media is located and supposed to be picked up?

A7 ‐ We will likely ship to the vendor, but if pickup is necessary, address is National Library of Medicine, 8600 Rockville Pike, Bldg 38, Bethesda MD, 20894
