About this file

This document is a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a focused ultrasound system to conduct brain imaging in awake, freely-moving rodents in various behavioral conditions. The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Intramural Research Program requires this system to support their neuropsychopharmacology research on drug addiction.

The RFP describes the required system specifications, including the Vantage NXT 256 acquisition system, transducer, HIFU configuration, and software. It specifies a 12-16 week delivery timeline to a location in Baltimore, Maryland. The solicitation is being conducted under simplified acquisition procedures as a commercial item acquisition. Proposals will be evaluated on technical capability, contract management, speed of delivery, and past performance, with price also considered. Responses are due by August 28, 2024. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code is 334516 - Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing.

Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Intramural Research Program (IRP) Neuroscience Unit requires a focused ultrasound system to conduct brain imaging in awake, freely-moving rodents in various behavioral conditions.

2. Background Information and Objective:

The NIDA IRP Mission is to conduct state-of-the-art basic, preclinical and clinical research on mechanisms that underlie substance use disorder, addiction and relapse.

Ultimately, we hope to translate these efforts into new methods for the prevention and treatment of substance use disorder highlighting the following: enhancing our research by taking advantage of our unique and outstanding strengths; increasing translational research and fortifying our clinical portfolio; strengthening our basic science with investment in technology; increasing Diversity and Inclusion at all levels; and prioritizing Trans-NIH initiatives and growing strong ties with other institutes.

NIDA conducts state-of-the-art neuropsychopharmacology research using preclinical models of drug addiction with translational relevance. NIDA has conducted brain imaging in anesthetized rodents with functional magnetic resonance imaging. NIDA now requires brain images in awake, freely-moving rodents. This approach will provide an unprecedented way of investigating whole-brain circuitries while rodents are engaging in drug-related behaviors. NIDA intends to test the effects of compounds that reduce drug seeking and taking while examining brain-wide activity. NIDA require a brand name or equal focused ultrasound system that is compatible with our recently procured PhenoSys JetBall Virtual Reality System. NIDA requires a focused ultrasound system that comes with devices and software for focused ultrasound brain imaging. NIDA also requires focused ultrasound to interfere with drug and brain interactions.
