About this file
This document is a combined synopsis/solicitation for a Wireless Fiber Photometry System. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Section on Behavioral Neuroscience requires the acquisition of a turnkey wireless fiber photometry system to complement their existing wired systems and support experiments with freely moving animals, especially non-human primates.
The solicitation requests quotes for two sets of the wireless fiber photometry system, which must be compatible with the agency's existing equipment, allow for vertical animal movement without data artifacts, and be suitable for use with various animal models including rats and marmosets. Responses are due by 3 p.m. Eastern Time on July 5, 2024 and will be evaluated on price and technical capability. The Government anticipates awarding a firm fixed-price purchase order within 30 days of receipt of order, with delivery to the NIMH facility in Bethesda, MD. The NAICS code is 334516 - Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing.

Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs
PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose:
The National of Mental Health (NIMH) Section on Behaviorial Neuroscince (SBN) requires the acquisition of a wireless fiberphotometry.
Current approaches into investifgations of brain circuits and systems require detailed analyses of neuronal circuit dynamics in freely moving animals with neurotransmitter specificity. Wireless approaches to data recording allow animals freedom of movement and are easier to combine with other testing equipment. Projects being pursued by multiple members of the Section on Behavioral Neuroscience (SBN) require the acquisition of a ready to use (turnkey) wireless fiber photometry (FP) system. Fiber photometry allows measuring of neural activity via Calcium and neurotransmitter-specific sensors. There are two wired FP systems already in use at SBN and two more wireless
FP systems will complement the existing FP systems as well as expand SBN’s members ability of recording neuronal activity in a larger set of behavioral tests. Wireless
FP system is especially suitable for work with non-human primates.
2. Background Information and Objective: Fiber photometry is a neuronal imaging technique used to monitor neuronal activity of specifically targeted cell populations. Fiber photometry uses excitation light from implanted fiber optics to record fluorescent activity of genetically encoded Calcium or neurotransmitter-specific indicators in neuronal populations that fluoresce in the presence of Calcium ions or neurotransmitter molecules. This imagining can be used at the same time that behavioral or electrophysiology experiments are being conducted giving a better understanding of the underpinning of brain function and its role in animal behavior in freely moving animals.
Due to SBN's growing integration of fiber photometry into their standard experimental paradigms and expansion into work with non-human primates, two new wireless FP systems are required. These systems will complement two existing wired FB systems, but allow neuronal data recording in experimental settings where animals are jumping and moving in the vertical direction, as non-human primates tend to do. In such conditions a wireless FP is needed to avoid large movement-related artifacts in the recorded data and to prevent damage of the FP equipment.
