PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
1. Statement of Need and Purpose:
Brooks Tube Auditor and IntelliXcap 96
2. Background Information and Objective:
The NCATS Compound Management (CoMa) group needs an additional non-contact, vision-based volume measurement system. The instrument will measure the volume of solution in SBS format microtubes such as the ones used in our automated compound store. Having a system like this will give us an accurate and convenient way to inventory NCATS liquid stocks. Sample requests will be streamlined with the foreknowledge of a sample’s remaining volume. The volumes will be recorded in an order processing database.
In addition, CoMa requires a system capable of removing caps from Labcyte Echo Qualified AcoustiX tubes to support the new ability to acoustically transfer liquids directly from a tube to a destination plate. The IntelliXcap 96 provides this capability such that the caps can automatically be removed and held in place until after an acoustic transfer is complete and then recapped to ensure sample integrity.
Inventory control is a top priority for any compound management group. As the frequency and quantity of orders of liquid samples increases, it is paramount NCATS knows the amount of remaining sample before the time of order fulfillment. This way NCATS can anticipate its ability to fill any particular order without having to physically access the samples and manually verifying their existing volume by sight. NCATS currently uses a Tube Auditor purchased in 2011 which NCATS has since integrated into its workflow and database. With the addition of the Tube Auditor, NCATS has been able to quickly quantify the amount of solution in every sample tube and record that volume in a database.
With the acquisition of new, larger compound libraries, NCATS uses the current Tube Auditor constantly. It has proven to be a reliable instrument but to ensure continuation of service and to expand NCATS volume measuring capabilities, NCATS needs to add another system. NCATS also needs to add a system that will allow for the automated removal and re-addition of caps onto acoustic tubes to support the newest acoustic dispenser provided by LabCyte that was developed in close coordination with Brooks.
