The mission of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) is to conduct and support medical research and research training and to disseminate science-based information on diabetes and other endocrine and metabolic diseases; digestive diseases, nutritional disorders, and obesity; and kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases, to improve people’s health and quality of life.
The three whole-room indirect calorimeters (Metabolic Suites) in the NIH Clinical Center are maintained and operated by members of the Human Energy and Body Weight Regulation Core under the supervision of Dr. Kong Chen. Changes in the oxygen and carbon dioxide levels in the air in the Metabolic Suites are used to measure human metabolism which serves as a primary or secondary endpoint in many studies supported by the NIDDK Metabolic Clinical Research Unit, including intra- and inter-institute protocols. Four oxygen analyzers are required to measure the oxygen concentration of the air inside and surrounding the room calorimeters. The analyzers have an estimated lifespan of 10-12 years.
