1Q: SPECIFICATION 09 97 13 – COATINGS IS EXTENSIVE IN ITS SCOPE, CONSIDERING THE DI MINIMIS NATURE OF THE CLEANING/COATING WORK ON THE THREE STEEL PILES. PLEASE CONSIDER RELAXING
THE SPECIFICATION REQUIREMENTS TO REFLECT THE SCOPE OF WORK IN THE CONTRACT.
1A: This is the standard spec for a coating system. Therefore, the requirements in Specification 09 97 13 will not be amended. Once an abrasion method is decided by the contractor within the limits of the specification, the submittals load will be significantly reduced as non-used methods are no longer applicable. The basic scope for this task is preparing the surface to SSPC 6/NACE No.3 and applying the coating system according to the manufacturer's instructions.
2Q: UNDER GENERAL NOTES 22 ON SHEET G-002, IS THE CONTRACTOR RESPONSIBLE FOR SUPPORT OF THE EXISTING STRUCTURE DURING CAISSON DEMOLITION/ENCASEMENT. IF SO, PLEASE PROVIDE THE
DEAD & LIVE LOADINGS ON THE EXISTING CAISSONS.
2A: The engineers do not have the existing loading for the pier, however, the existing encasements that are to be removed are not structural in nature, they are protective. Given this, by removing the encasements, the structural capacity of the caissons should not be compromised. The contractor is still responsible for bracing excavations or other activities as required.
3Q: DRAWING S-502 SECTION C1 NOTE 3 – PLEASE CONFIRM THAT THE LENGTH OF ENCASEMENT REMOVAL IS LIMITED TO THE DEPTH DEFINED BY SECTION C3 NOTE 1; I.E., 18” OR TO THE EXISTING CONCRETE CAP, WHICHEVER IS LESS.
3A: The entire length of the existing encasements shall be removed as per S-502 C1 Note 3. Installation of the new encasements shall commence in accordance with C3 note 1.
4Q: PLEASE CONFIRM THAT THE STRINGER CONNECTION (3X3 ANGLE) IS A-36 GALVANIZED.
4A: The 3x3 angles shall be A-36 steel and hot-dip galvanized according to ASTM A123.
5Q: PLEASE CONFIRM THAT ALL MATERIALS REMOVED UNDER 02 41 00 DEMOLITION (E.G., CAISSON CONCRETE)
