AMENDMENT 0003
SOLICITATION 70Z0G118BPFA01200
12 JANUARY 2018
CLARIFICATION REGARDING THE EXISTING GRANITE TOP STAIR TREAD:
The existing granite top stair tread extends under the existing brick end walls by 6” to 12” and appears to extend completely under the two brick columns. Per the existing building drawings, the existing top tread is set in mortar on a continuous concrete foundation wall/slab. The existing top tread appears to be sound, in good condition, well supported, and showing no signs of movement. Based on current observations and for bidding purposes, the existing top stair tread shall remain in place and become part of the re-installed stair. Additional inspection of this stair tread and its setting material shall be completed after the adjacent floor stones and the other stair treads are removed (as noted on drawings) to determine if any repair of its setting mortar is required. Any additional work required based on the additional inspection will be addressed by modification to the contract at that time.
PRE-BID INQUIRIES AND RESPONSES:
Question #1: We were unable to attend the site visit last week. Can we reach out to Garrett Starasinic to set up an appointment to visit the site?
Answer #1: A site visit can be coordinated by contacting the COR, LT Cory Fagan, at (860)444-8226 or @ cory.p.fagan@uscg.mil.
Question #2: Do you have any idea of the type of marble and granite available that closely matches existing?
Answer #2: Existing types/sources are unknown.
Question #3: Please confirm that the intent is to have the metal railings shop-finished w/ touchup onsite after installation.
Answer #3: Confirmed. Perform shop painting and field touch-ups per paragraph 3.1.H of Section 057300 and Section 099100.
Question #4: Please provide a total quantity of light fixtures to be replaced per stair section 1/A-500.
Answer #4: A single fixture is located at both cheek walls as shown in the cited detail (total of 2 for the project).
Question #5: Is any lighting required for the new handicap ramp?
Answer #5: No ramp lighting is included in the scope of work for this project.
Question #6: Drawing C-300 notes that a Dogwood tree is to be transplanted. How are we expected to transplant a tree to an area that has maybe 12" of topsoil before we hit rock and guarantee the tree will survive?
Answer #6: Planting locations within the work site shall be coordinated with the COR per Addendum #1.

Question #7: SKC-1 changes the layout of the handicap ramp. Can you please revise the site layout, landscape and grading drawings as they are affected by this change.
Answer #7: No additional drawings are forthcoming. Affected elements shall be adjusted as required to accommodate revisions shown on Addendum Sketch SKC-1.
Question #8: SKC-1 shows a natural stone path with reused stone instead of the concrete walk depicted on the site drawings. Where are these salvaged stones coming from? And can you provide a detail for this stone path.
Answer #8: Salvage stones from existing stone walk; location shown on drawing C-101. Provide new 6” processed aggregate base for relocated stone walk; location shown on sketch SKC-1.
Question #9: Is there any line striping or signage required at the newly created handicap drop off/pickup zone?
Answer #9: No striping or signage is included in the scope of work for this project.
Question #10: Can you please provide a detailed section through the stairs showing how the granite is to be reinstalled. Are the stones pinned? If so, then how? Do they sit on top of each other with a 1” overlap, or are they shimmed off each other with a gap for backer rod and sealant?
Answer #10: The existing granite steps are set in mortar on concrete foundation walls (no pins). Foundation walls perpendicular to stair run are 12” wide about 5’-5” on center and stepped to support stair treads. End of treads have 4” bearing on foundation walls. Remove, salvage, clean, and re-set existing granite stair treads per drawing A-100. Bottom tread shall be set in mortar on continuous foundation wall, typical treads shall be set in mortar on foundation walls and with treads leading edge having 2” bearing on tread below, treads slope 1/8” per foot toward leading edge for drainage; see typical stair section 1/A-500. End joints between treads shall have mortar, backer rod, and sealant per detail 5/A-500.
