Emergency Shaft Seals Consumable Components, Renew, In-Water

1. SCOPE

1.1 Intent. This work item describes the requirements for the Contractor to renew port and starboard emergency shaft seal components, with the support of divers, while the vessel is waterborne.

NOTE

This task requires the assistance of divers to prevent water ingress via the port and starboard stern tube while performing this work item.

1.2 Government-furnished property. None.

3. REQUIREMENTS

3.1 General.

3.1.1 CIR.

None.

3.1.2. The Contractor shall direct the dive team to pack and unpack the stern tube, prior to and upon completion of the seal maintenance, respectively, as detailed in this work item. Upon completing all tasks, the Contractor shall inform the Coast Guard Inspector that all maintenance is complete and the hull is clear and ready for underway operations.

3.1.2.1 Within 48 hours of task completion, the Contractor shall provide a written CFR detailing the work accomplished.

3.1.3 Tech Rep. The contractor shall provide the services of a qualified Tech Rep, who is familiar with the shaft seal assembly, to do the following on site:

· Ensure compliance with manufacture’s procedures and standards during assembly of bellows and emergency seal assembly while in the water.

3.1.3.1 Divers. The Contractor shall provide qualified diving services. The Contractor shall provide proof of diver qualifications to the Coast Guard Representative. Divers shall be on site and ready for any emergency with this evolution from start to completion.

3.1.3 Protective measures. The ships force shall install suitable covering to seal off and protect all non-affected surfaces/equipment and spaces in the vicinity of the work area against contamination during the performance of work. The divers shall construct a cofferdam or alternative barrier around the shaft, preventing the flow of any sea water into the shaft seal area.

3.1.4 Interferences. The Contractor shall be aware that interferences in way of work include, but are not limited to the below-listed. The ships force will remove all interferences at the request of the contractor.

· Wiring.

· Piping.

· Deck plates.

· Shaft safety guard.

3.2 Seal inspection. The Contractor shall accomplish the following for the shaft mechanical seal assembly, using Coast Guard Drawing 154-WPC-243-201 and TP 8081 as a guidance. Follow the proper procedures for with shaft in place. Disassemble and remove the shaft seal assembly.

· Clean all components free of marine growth.

· Perform visual inspection of cleaned components.

· Renew components with contractor-furnished Wartsila OEM service kits C: PN H76214-8 for PSE stern Tube Seal. IAW TP 8081.

WARNING!

Do not rotate shaft during renewal tasks!

3.3 Operational test – post repairs. After completion of work, the Contractor shall witness an operational test (by Coast Guard personnel) of the shaft seal assemblies to prove satisfactory operating condition. Inspect and correct any water leaks, abnormal noise, and any binding in normal shaft operation. Submit a CFR.

3.4 Equipment operation. Coast Guard personnel will operate all shipboard machinery and equipment during all operational tests.

4.1 Location of work.
