About this file
This is a Proposed Sole Source Purchase Form submitted by the University of New Mexico (UNM) Purchasing Department for the acquisition of a Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX Nano flow cytometer system. The request, dated July 8, 2026, was submitted by Curt Hines from the Biochemistry Department and seeks approval for a one-time capital equipment purchase. The acquisition includes the CytoFLEX Nano analyzer unit, computer, monitor, startup reagents, a service contract, and application support. The equipment will be integrated into the UNM Flow Cytometry Shared Resource to establish dedicated nanoscale flow cytometry capability for analyzing extracellular vesicles, viral particles, engineered nanoparticles, and micro- or nanoplastics that cannot be effectively analyzed by the core facility's existing conventional cell-focused flow cytometers. The system will serve multiple investigators across the UNM Health Sciences Center and provide a new shared-resource capability not currently available on campus.
The proposed vendor is Beckman Coulter Life Sciences, located at 5350 Lakeview Parkway South Drive, Indianapolis, Indiana 46268, with a total contract amount of $190,304.10. The sole source justification is based on the CytoFLEX Nano being a proprietary instrument available exclusively from Beckman Coulter, with no third-party distribution. The acquisition also maintains platform continuity with the existing Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX instruments already operational in the Shared Resource, minimizing additional training requirements and operational complexity. The form indicates that no other vendors were formally contacted, as alternative approaches to nanoscale particle characterization were reviewed during planning but did not provide the equivalent combination of dedicated nanoscale flow cytometry, multiparameter fluorescence detection, multiple side-scatter measurements, and compatibility with existing CytoFLEX infrastructure and workflows.

5350 Lakeview Parkway South Dr.; Indianapolis, IN 46268 one-time capital equipment purchase
Acquisition of a Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX Nano flow cytometer system, including analyzer, computer and monitor, startup reagents, service contract, and application support.
This purchase is needed to establish dedicated nanoscale flow cytometry capability within the UNM Flow Cytometry Shared Resource. The CytoFLEX Nano will enable analysis of extracellular vesicles, viral particles/VLPs, engineered nanoparticles, and micro- or nanoplastics that fall below the practical range of conventional cell-focused flow cytometers currently available in the core.
The instrument will support multiple investigators across UNM HSC and provide a new shared-resource capability not currently available on campus.
The requested equipment is a proprietary Beckman Coulter system. The CytoFLEX Nano is a dedicated nanoscale flow cytometer available only from Beckman Coulter and is not distributed through third-party vendors. This procurement also includes proprietary system components, startup reagents, application support, and service coverage specific to the CytoFLEX Nano platform.
These goods and services must be obtained from the original manufacturer to ensure compatibility, i nstallation, warranty support, training, maintenance, and continued operation of the instrument.

III. SUPPLEMENTAL DETAILS. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AS
REQUESTED BELOW:
Describe in detail the unique capabilities of the proposed vendor’s goods/service and/or personnel performing the work and why this constitutes the only source. Focus on what is unique about the goods/service and why no other vendor could meet your needs.
The CytoFLEX Nano will be integrated into the existing UNM Flow Cytometry Shared Resource, which already operates Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX instruments and associated workflows.
Acquisition of the CytoFLEX Nano will maintain platform continuity in user training, software environment, instrument operation, service support, and experimental workflow development.
Because the Shared Resource already uses the CytoFLEX platform, the CytoFLEX Nano is the most compatible option for expanding nanoscale particle analysis while minimizing additional training burden and operational complexity.
The Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX Nano provides a dedicated nanoscale flow cytometry capability that is not available through the standard cell-focused instruments currently housed in the UNM Flow Cytometry Shared Resource. The instrument is specifically designed for analysis of very small particles, including extracellular vesicles, vira l particles/VLPs, engineered nanoparticls, and micro- or nanoplastics, with detection of particles at least as small as 40 nm under specified conditions.
It also provides five side-scatter channels, up to six fluorescence channels, built-in quality control and baseline monitoring features, and high counting accuracy, making it well suited for rigorous characterization of heterogeneous nanoscale particle. The requested goods and services are proprietary to Beckman Coulter. The CytoFLEX Nano instrument, associated startup reagents, computer configuration, application support, and service coverage are specific to this platform and must be obtained from the manufacturer to ensure compatibility, installation, warranty support, training, maintenance, and reliable operation. In addition, the UNM Flow Cytometry Shared Resource already operates Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX instruments, so acquisition of the CytoFLEX Nano maintains platform continuity in user training, software environment, instrument operation, service support, and workflow development. For these reasons, Beckman Coulter is the only source that can provide the requested instrument and associated proprietary support in a manner that |meets the scientific and operational needs of the Shared Resource.
Describe the due diligence made to locate other possible sources including communications with other universities, communications with similar providers, web searches, yellow page searches, review of advertisements and trade publications, etc.
List the other vendors who were contacted. Please describe the specs/qualifications/criteria that the other vendors were unable to satisfy.
No other vendors were formally contacted for equivalent instrumentation because the requested CytoFLEX Nano is a proprietary platform. During planning, the Flow Cytometry Shared Resource reviewed other available approaches for nanoscale particle analysis and considered whether they could meet the scientific and operational needs of the core. These approaches did not provide the same combination of dedicated nanoscale flow cytometry, multiparameter fluorescence detection, multiple side-scatter measurements, and compatibility with the existing CytoFLEX platform and workflows already established in the Shared Resource.
No other vendors were formally contacted. The Shared Resource considered alternative approaches to nanoscale particle characterization, but did not identify an equivalent platform offering the same combination of nanoscale flow cytometry, multiparameter fluorescence analysis, multiple side-scatter channels, and compatibility with the existing CytoFLEX infrastructure.
