About this file
This is a UNM Proposed Sole Source Purchase Form submitted by the University of New Mexico's Dialysis Department to procure hemodialysis equipment from Fresenius Medical Care. The request, submitted on October 2, 2026, by Unit Director Megan Prinz, seeks to acquire a Fresenius Medical Care 2008T BlueStar Hemodialysis Machine and an AquaC UNO H Dialysis Water Treatment System. The AquaC UNO H is a reverse osmosis unit designed to remove organic and inorganic substances and microbial contaminants from water used in hemodialysis treatment. The purchase is needed to replace aging dialysis equipment currently used to treat both adult and pediatric patients. The term of purchase is structured as a single capital purchase plus disposables for one year with potential renewals consistent with New Mexico Procurement Code requirements.
The proposed purchase amount is $494,000 from Fresenius Medical Care, located at 920 Winter Street, Waltham, Massachusetts 02451. The sole source justification is based on the proprietary nature of the equipment and its unique ability to accommodate low-weight, low-volume pediatric patients, a capability that competing vendors including Vantive and B. Braun cannot currently provide. Fresenius Medical Care is identified as the Original Equipment Manufacturer and sole source for the 2008 series hemodialysis machines, the AquaC UNO H water treatment systems, and associated spare parts in the United States. The AquaC UNO H includes proprietary disinfection capabilities using hot water rather than chemical disinfectants, requires no preventative maintenance kits or calibration, and supports various dialysis modalities including isolated UF, SLED, and low-volume hemodialysis for treatment sessions up to 12 hours. The request was approved by Jeffrey Gilmore on October 2, 2026, and will be posted on the UNM Sunshine Portal and New Mexico Procurement website for 30 days prior to purchase.

II. BASIS FOR SOLE SOURCE PROCUREMENT. CHOOSE APPLICABLE BOX(ES) AND
PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION, AS REQUESTED:
☐ Proprietary item, technology or service only available from the proposed vendor. (Check box and describe proprietary component)
The AquaC -disinfection capability------including the membrane and permeate ring------allowing disinfection with hot water rather than chemical disinfectants.
Automated rinse and standby-heat functions can reduce staff involvement and help streamline daily operation.
Fresenius identifies up to 70% water recovery with intelligent parameter controls, depending on operating conditions.
No preventative-maintenance kits, two-year preventative maintenance intervals, and no calibration requirement.
Designed to support a broad range of patients and clinical applications within the acute-care and chronic-care environment. In addition to standard hemodialysis, the machine supports isolated UF, SLED, and low-volume hemodialysis for patients for extended treatment sessions of up to 12 hours.
The machine incorporates automated technologies designed to reduce the number of manual steps required during treatment.
Idle Mode designed to reduce dialysate and water consumption when the machine is temporarily not actively treating. Fresenius reports that Idle Mode can reduce dialysate and water usage by up to two-thirds.
Can perform an Independent Conductivity and pH Self-Test, using the post-dialyzer conductivity cell as an independent conductivity check and automatically checking pH when the optional bibag® On-line Dry Bicarbonate Concentrate system is being used.
Optional bibag system provides an alternative to traditional liquid bicarbonate concentrate. The dry bicarbonate concentrate is lightweight and can streamline bicarbonate handling and storage.
Optional Crit-Line® Monitoring System provides continuous, non-invasive monitoring of hematocrit, oxygen saturation, and blood volume changes during treatment to help clinicians make informed ultrafiltration decisions in real time.
☐ Compatibility requirement with existing item, technology or service. (Check box and describe compatibility requirement)
☐ Renewal of support/maintenance/subscription of software, technology or other intellectual property. (Check box and describe)
☒ Other Basis for Sole Source: Please describe below:
The only machine that can accommodate low-weight, low-volume patients in our pediatric population. Fresenius Medical Care is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and the sole source for new 2008® series hemodialysis machines, Clinical Data eXchange™ (CDX), bibag®, CLiC™ devices and associated spare parts. This is to confirm that Fresenius Medical Care is the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) and the sole source for the AquaBplus™, AquaA™ and AquaC UNO H™ Dialysis Water Treatment Systems including associated spare parts in the US.
III. SUPPLEMENTAL DETAILS. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AS
REQUESTED BELOW:
Describe in detail the unique capabilities of the proposed vendor’s goods/service and/or personnel performing the work and why this constitutes the only source. Focus on what is unique about the goods/service and why no other vendor could meet your needs.
The AquaC UNO H is an RO component, not a complete water-treatment system; appropriate pretreatment and, when required, post-treatment are still necessary to meet applicable standards. All optional components listed on quote provided.
The Fresenius machines are the only machines available right now that can handle the low weight and low blood volume of our pediatric patients. We need this equipment to safely provide dialysis to our smaller pediatric patients, and no other vendor currently has what we need.
Describe the due diligence made to locate other possible sources including communications with other universities, communications with similar providers, web searches, yellow page searches, review of advertisements and trade publications, etc.
We reviewed available dialysis equipment and researched other companies that provide dialysis machines for pediatric patients. We also reached out to other healthcare equipment providers and compared the options available.
This review did not identify another source that could meet our specific needs.
List the other vendors who were contacted. Please describe the specs/qualifications/criteria that the other vendors were unable to satisfy.
We contacted other dialysis vendors, including Vantive and B. Braun, to see if they had a machine that would work for our pediatric patients. We also looked at the equipment and options they currently offer. At this time, we were unable to find another vendor that can meet the needs of our low-weight, low-volume pediatric patients.
