About this file

This is a technical specification document from the University of New Mexico Hospital (UNMH) regarding hand biomechanics for a medical device known as the "Digit Widget." The device is designed to restore palmar soft tissue length in cases of contracted proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints by applying extension torque through skeletal pins. The specification document outlines the biomechanical requirements and functional parameters necessary for the device to effectively rebalance forces across the joint toward normal physiological function when used in conjunction with a comprehensive surgical treatment plan. The document provides detailed technical specifications and performance criteria that potential contractors or device manufacturers must meet to qualify for this procurement opportunity with UNMH in New Mexico.

The document focuses on the engineering and biomechanical standards required for the Digit Widget device, including measurements, force distribution specifications, and clinical validation parameters. This procurement appears to support UNMH's orthopedic or hand surgery program by establishing clear technical benchmarks that ensure the device can effectively achieve its therapeutic objectives. The specification represents UNMH's commitment to utilizing evidence-based medical technology that addresses the complex biomechanical challenges associated with PIP joint contracture treatment, combining mechanical intervention with surgical rebalancing protocols to optimize patient outcomes.

Provide a basic description of goods/services to be provided:

The “Digit Widget” grows the palmar soft tissues of a contracted PIP joint back to length by transmitting an extension torque to the joint via skeletal pins. When combined with a surgical plan to rebalance the forces across the joint toward normal, the Widget can improve the odds of increasing the joint’s active range of motion. Avoids skin pressure limitations of conventional splints and casts, Minimal restriction of hand function during soft tissue growth.

Why is this purchase needed?

Our device will help to get the finger straight; the challenge is finding the right plan to rebalance the joint to maintain extension.

The device is a tool to reverse the PIP flexion contracture. Correcting the force imbalance that caused the contracture may require additional surgery done at the time of Digit Widget installation or at a later date as in the example of a pulley rupture when the surgeon needs to start by gaining extension and then repairing the ruptured pulley.

UNM Proposed Sole Source Form – Rev 04/07/2021

The Digit Widget applies skeletal extension torque to reverse the contracture instead of joint traction or skin pressure, which other methods use. The Digit Widget does not prohibit finger flexion. The patient remains more active during treatment, thereby minimizing joint stiffness. Avoids skin pressure limitations of conventional splints and casts, Minimal restriction of hand function during soft tissue growth.

Describe the due diligence made to locate other possible sources including communications with other universities, communications with similar providers, web searches, yellow page searches, review of advertisements and trade publications, etc.
