Goals: The Lyndon B. Johnson Environmental Legacy project would consist of The Teacher Learning Center at Teton Science Schools (TSS) and Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Site working jointly in leading partnerships and exploration of various programs within the project. In the first phase, the Recipient and NPS will work jointly to build a rural Placed-Based consortium in Central Texas Hill Country. Additionally, a second phase of the project would consist of hosting a series of teachers’ workshops to build LBJ Environmental Legacy into every day curriculum through place-based learning.

Project objectives include the following for Phase 1:

• Gather organizations together that are meaningfully engaging in the Hill Country as a place for living and learning

• Understand shared resources for connecting to place

• Identify existing offerings and areas of focus of potential partner organizations

• Understand opportunities and needs for enhancing connections to place, and furthering place-based education o Identifying necessary support, training, etc. for educators, schools, partners, etc.

Project objectives include the following for Phase 2:

• Upon completion of a thorough understanding of necessary supports and needs for educators, of building a teacher’s workshop would commence.

• Engage existing connections and establish new connections with formal educational partners (K-12, universities, etc.)

• Successful facilitation of a pilot teacher professional development program for Texas Hill Country educators on place-based education and LBJ’s environmental legacy.

PP: President Johnson signed into law nearly 300 pieces of legislation dealing with the environment, conservation, and beauty—more than in the previous 187 years combined. This comprised roughly one-third of all the legislation signed into law during his presidency. Yet it is an overlooked component of the Great Society and Johnson’s legacy. The proposed project will serve to draw attention to Johnson’s vast accomplishments in making the country a cleaner, healthier, and more beautiful place for all Americans. By educating and enlightening students, teachers, and members of the public

Overview: The project will be a multi-phased approach with Phase 1 to begin with a network of non-profit education and conservation organizations providing informal placed-based learning opportunities for students. Once organizations are identified, the development of a placed-based consortium will be established. The establishment of said consortium will assist in understanding resources, opportunity areas, level of interest and connections with formal education partners. Additionally, NPS and the recipient will engage existing connections and establish new connections with formal educational partners (K-12, universities, etc.) to build additional and share current curriculum with partners.
Recipient: Teton Science School
Sub Involv: 1. Strategically develop further goals and objects to ensure partners fully understand and embrace placed-based programming and LBJ Environmental Legacy.

2. Work jointly with NPS to develop partnerships, LBJ Environmental Legacy consortium, teacher workshop and additional curriculum.

3. Work jointly to disseminate curriculum and make available online or on a requested basis.

Justification: The Teacher Learning Center (TLC) at Teton Science Schools has implemented a variety of professional development experiences for both public and private schools as well as universities. An educational framework is used by the TLC to help guide these experiences. The framework is neutral to benchmarks and standards and thus can be implemented in any school. Central to the framework is the concept of understanding place as a tool to engage students and integrate curriculum. Critical to the implementation of this framework are three core competencies that we believe are essential to support high levels of student learning: community leadership, educational approach, and intentional culture. This is unique to the organization and a skill that staff at LYJO doesn't have experience in.
