About this file

This is a Questions and Answers document for RFQ 6982AF26Q000004, a drilling project for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) Bureau of Right of Way at the Upper Vista House Road location, issued on 3/4/2026.

The document addresses two key clarifications regarding drilling equipment specifications. First, regarding drill type flexibility, the Government confirmed that alternative drill types producing equivalent results to an auger are acceptable, provided the boring diameter does not exceed 6 inches due to environmental constraints. The drilling work requires sample collection of approximately 50 pounds or 3/4 of a 5-gallon bucket. Second, regarding equipment mobility, the Government clarified that track-mounted drill rigs are acceptable as long as they are sufficiently sized to drill 6-inch borings to 5 feet depth through an estimated 6-inch asphalt layer and fill soil material. Since bore holes are spaced less than several hundred feet apart, track-mounted vehicles can travel between locations under their own power without requiring trailer transport. These clarifications indicate flexibility in equipment specifications while maintaining strict parameters on hole diameter and boring depth requirements.

DRILLING – CA BR NCAO SHAS(1) UPPER VISTA HOUSE ROAD

3/4/2026 Questions Answers

1. I noticed in the spec that it specifically called out a truck mounted drill rig and was wondering if the team was interested in a sonic drill rig to provide sampling instead. It can provide an intact core which would give a better idea of the pavement structure and layer thicknesses at each boring location.

A different drill type that produces the same results as an auger is acceptable the 6-in diameter cannot be exceeded because of environmental hole size constraints. The drilling is needed to allow for a sample collection of approx 50 lbs or 3/4 of a 5 gallon bucket.

2. Our rigs are track mounted not truck mounted and wanted to confirm that was acceptable for the bid as well.

A track mounted drill rig must be of sufficient size to meet the requirements for drilling a 6-inch boring to 5 ft depth through an estimate asphalt depth of 6 inches and fill soil material. The distance between bore holes is less than several hundred feet so a track mounted vehicle can drive from location to location without being loaded on a trailer.
