About this file

This memorandum provides additional geotechnical recommendations for the design and construction of the Beartooth Ravine Bridge on the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming. The bridge will be founded on micropiles extending into bedrock beneath a talus slope. Additional lateral support can be provided through permanent ground anchors extending into bedrock, designed for 0.5 MPa bond strength and inclined at 15 to 20 degrees from horizontal. Temporary shoring of the pier foundations may be required using temporary soil nail walls. The lateral resistance of the talus should be based on design values for loose granular soil. One verification micropile load test and proof tests of micropiles at each abutment and pier should be conducted. Foundation design should follow the working stress methodology in the AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation to realign and reconstruct 2.61 km of the Beartooth Highway, including a new 600 foot steel bridge. Key work includes 44,000 cubic meters of excavation, 800 cubic meters of structural backfill, 2,400 square meters of MSE walls, 25,000 metric tons of aggregate base, 5,000 metric tons of asphalt paving, and structural steel, culverts, seeding, pavement markings, and flagging. The project has one schedule and four options, and is located at an elevation of 10,950 feet with a construction season from June 2019 to October 2020. The estimated total cost is $14-17 million. The opportunity is anticipated to be advertised in March 2019 by the Federal Highway Administration.

TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM

To: Matt DeMarco Geotechnical Engineer Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands Division 555 Zang Street #259 Lakewood, CO 80228

From: Richard Tocher, P.E.

Project Manager

Date: June 20, 2003

Subject: Addendum No. 1, Beartooth Ravine Bridge, Geotechnical Investigation

FHWA T.O. No. DTFH68-01-T-00039 URS Project No. 22234609.00300

The following memorandum provides additional geotechnical recommendations for the design and construction of the Beartooth Ravine Bridge, Beartooth Highway, U.S. 212, Park County, Wyoming. We previously prepared a geotechnical investigation for the project with the results presented in a report dated November 5, 2002. We met on March 11, 003 to review the foundation recommendations. We have developed the following additional recommendations:

1. The bridge will be founded on micropiles extending into the intact bedrock beneath the talus. The micropiles should be designed for lateral loads from the bridge superstructure.

No additional load due to movement of the talus is required.

2. Additional lateral load capacity can be developed using permanent ground anchors extending into the bedrock. Anchors should be designed for allowable bond stress of 0.5 MPa. Anchors should be inclined at 15 to 20” from horizontal.

3. Temporary shoring of the two-pier foundation areas may be required. This can be accomplished with temporary soil nail walls.

4. The lateral resistance of the talus mass should be based on the “k” value for sand, gravel and cobbles presented in the report. This value is indicative of a loose granular soil mass.

5. One verification micropile load test should be performed prior to beginning production piles. One micropile at each abutment and bridge pier should be proof tested.

6. The foundation system should be designed using working stress design methodology presented in the Sixteenth Edition Standard Specifications for Highway Bridges, AASHTO.
