About this file
This memorandum provides additional geotechnical recommendations for four bridge projects on the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming. Steel H-piles may be used for foundations, with allowable working stresses of 82.8 MPa at all sites except the Beartooth Lake Outlet Bridge. At that site, HP12x74 or HP14x89 piles should be driven six meters into underlying cohesive soil to achieve capacities of 130-160 kN or 150-180 kN, respectively.
The federal contract opportunity is for roadway realignment and reconstruction work on 2.61 km of U.S. Route 212, the Beartooth Highway. The project includes excavation, grading, drainage, construction of a 600-foot steel bridge, mechanically stabilized earth walls, aggregate base course, paving, and traffic control. The estimated cost is $14-17 million. The solicitation number is 6982AF19B000008 and anticipated advertisement is March 28, 2019 through the Federal Highway Administration and Wyoming Department of Transportation. The construction period is from June 2019 to October 2020.

TECHNICAL MEMORANDUM
To: Matt DeMarco Geotechnical Engineer Federal Highway Administration Central Federal Lands Division 555 Zang Street #259 Lakewood, CO 80228
From: Richard Tocher, P.E.
Project Manager
Date: July 29, 2003
Subject: Addendum No. 1, Geotechnical Investigation, Four Bridges, Beartooth
Highway U.S. 212 Park County, Wyoming FHWA T.O. No. DTFH68-01-T-00039 URS Project No. 22234609.00300
The following memorandum provides additional geotechnical recommendations for the design and construction of the four bridges, Beartooth Highway, U.S. 212, Park County, Wyoming.
We previously prepared a geotechnical investigation for the project with the results presented in a report dated November 6, 2002. We met on March 11, 003 to review the foundation recommendations. We have developed the following additional recommendations:
1. Bridges may be founded on HP 10x49, HP10x57, HP12x74 or HP14x89, depending on required capacity. All sites except Beartooth Lake Outlet should be designed for an allowable pile working stress of 82.8 MPa.
2. Steel H-piles at the Beartooth Lake Outlet Bridge should be driven into the underlying cohesive soil layer. A HP12x74 will develop an appropriate capacity of 130 to 160 kN when driven 6 meters into the cohesive layer. A HP14x89 will develop an approximate capacity of 150 to 180 kN when driven 6 meters into the cohesive layer.
