About this file

This technical memorandum from the Geotechnical Engineer at the CFLHD to the Project Manager presents results of material source testing to support the FY05 Beartooth Highway Project in Wyoming. It compiles test data from 2004 and prior years on potential aggregate sources including the Ghost Creek site and Island Lake Moraine. Test parameters covered gradation, classification, durability and other specifications. The memorandum indicates these sources require further evaluation by contractors for suitability but provides the test data to aid in material selection and scoping.

A related federal contract opportunity notice involves roadway realignment and reconstruction for 1.6 miles of the Beartooth Highway in Wyoming under solicitation number 6982AF19B000008. Principal work includes excavation, grading, an MSE wall, aggregate base, asphalt paving, culverts, seeding and other items. The project administered by FHWA is estimated to cost $14-17 million and will be advertised in March 2019 with construction from June 2019 to October 2020. It has one schedule and four options pertaining to additional roadwork, landscaping, bridge stonework and guide signs.

From: Matt DeMarco, Geotechnical Engineer, CFLHD

Subject: Compilation of Material Source Testing for the Beartooth Highway Project, WY FS 4-1(4)

The CFLHD Geotechnical Group has recently conducted additional material source testing in support of planned FY05 construction on the WY FS 4-1(4) Beartooth Highway segment, including several substantial rock cuts, a sizeable glacial moraine, and the Ghost Creek material source. This Technical Memorandum presents a compilation of all known material source testing conducted to date at these locations in order to scope the potential for aggregate availability on the project. This compilation in no way implies certification of the sources tested

– the Contractor is responsible for determining the ultimate suitability of the sources for the intended purpose(s), per FP-03 Section 105.02. References providing specific sampling location maps, descriptions of site conditions, and sample testing details are provided for each data set at the end of this memorandum (as available).

While it appears that suitable materials exist within the project and/or at the Ghost Creek material source for roadway, drainage, retaining wall, and paving aggregates, the Contractor should evaluate each source for quality and quantity per given application. Consideration should also be given to the following points:

• The gradations given in the tables above are not reflective of boulder and cobble contents within the Ghost Creek and Island Lake Moraine material sources. In some cases, bulk samples were crushed to acquire a suitable amount of sample for testing. Refer to the references for more details on sample preparation.

• Although LA Abrasion values are below specification for paving aggregate for the rock cut materials, it should be noted that sampling was conducted within the weathered, blast damaged talus on existing cuts. Higher quality material may be present within the unweathered rock mass. Rock coring along the project generally encountered high RQD values (rock quality designation index) and relatively high unconfined compressive strengths for the granitic rock present in the cuts.

• Although corrosive property testing was limited for the material sources, prior testing of both rock and soil units along the entire (4) segment indicated corrosive conditions are not present.
