ZMA Control Wing Mod 4 Area Modernization: Combined RFI Questions and Responses

1. Drawing A301, A302, A601: What is the scope change, if any, relating to the 2-hour fire rated barrier on the K-Line wall?

The design intent was to complete the horizontal shaft wall from the attic floor level, without removing any existing work associated with the CBI Lab Room 1051A. After a more detailed inspection of the configuration of the existing wall, it was determined, by the Fire Protection Engineers, that the design approach stated on the drawings would not suffice the requirements of a complete 2hr rated assembly.

The FAA is looking for a different solution to this matter to avoid affecting the existing work in the CBI Lab and delaying the current construction project for the Mod 4 Area modernization. For these reasons, the FAA has decided to de-scope the construction of the 2hr horizontal shaft wall at the K-Line wall. Existing wall construction is to remain. For reference, see redlines on drawing sheets A301, A302, and A601, attached to this email.

2. Drawing A101 Note 6: Does the FAA wish to receive alternate proposals aside from the approach listed for mitigating dust?

The Contractor can proposed an alternate method as part of the bid (aside from the approach listed for mitigating dust), if it presents an advantage to the Government. This Bid alternate shall be submitted in writing with the proper justification and must be correlated to the specific section of the work indicated on drawing A101 and project specifications, for FAA review and approval.

3. Is the FAA responsible for moving and storing furniture from areas of work?

The FAA will remove existing furniture stored inside the Mod 4 space prior to work.

4. Is there an extension to the bid due date pending scope changes and RFI answers?

Bid closing date have been extended until July 17, 2018 at 5:00 p.m.

5. Are there as-built drawings available showing the existing concrete topping slab on the first floor? If so, please provide.

Old documentations indicates the installation of 1 inch concrete toping on top of the waffle slab. There is no as-built drawings showing specific details of the topping. See drawing attached (Mod 4 Section Detail 7-10R).

6. Are there photos of the existing concrete topping slab on the first flooring being installed?

If so, please provide?

This construction is dated back to the 1960’s. No pictures are available.

7. What is the thickness of the existing concrete topping slab?

According to original construction drawings, a 1” topping was installed. To confirm this information, a piece of the existing topping was removed and measured 1.5 inches thick (See picture attached).

8. Per Keyed Demolition Note #2 on sheet A101, the existing exterior door at Existing Stair

3 (Door No. 001) is to be removed. Per the Door and Frame Schedule on sheet A611, Door No. 001 is shown as existing. Clarify whether this door is to remain or be replaced. If it is to be replaced, please provide information on the new door to be installed.

Existing Door 001 is existing to remain. Door will receive new hardware compatible with Security Access Control System, as indicated on drawings.

9. Please provide a plumbing isometric for the new plumbing work.

Isometric for drain and vent is not available. Field coordination is required. See contract drawings and specs for additional requirements. See response to Question #10, for additional information.

10. Per Keyed Note #1, there is a new VTR to be installed. Please verify that this VTR is necessary and must be installed.

The VTR will be vented through the wall. Penetration must include approved flashing, sealant, and screen cover. The vent must penetrate the wall at least 18’ above the floor of the mechanical room.

11. Please advise what the existing flooring to be removed in the existing admin area is.

The existing flooring to be removed is a combination of VCT and Carpet.

12. Please clarify what the size of the existing exterior opening at the north wall is. Will further concrete cutting and removal be required to achieve desired opening size?

See Dimensions indicated on drawings. No additional cutting will be required for the North Wall temporary opening.

13. Please confirm that the installation of the 2-hour rated shaft wall on the first floor is to be removed from the scope of work.

See response for question #1.

14. It is stated in the specifications that the contractor is to provide a fire watch. Is the contractor responsible for provide fire watch personnel?

Provide fire watch as indicated on Drawings and Specs. Fire watch is required during any open flame activity.

15. Please advise if there are any cracks in the existing basement ceiling (slab above) that have already been identified?

No cracks have been identified on the waffle slab floor. All existing sleeve penetrations have been sealed but not necessarily watertight. Please clarify what is the intention of this question?

16. Please confirm that any loose furniture will be moved or stored by the owner prior to the contractor starting work. If this is not the case, please indicate what will be in the contractor’s scope for moving and/or protecting existing furniture.

FAA will remove all furniture and stored material outside the Mod 4 Area prior to the work.

17. In the case that the existing concrete topping slab is well-adhered to the slab below and troublesome to remove, can the topping slab remain or must the topping slab be removed in full?

Topping shall be removed as indicated on drawings.

18. Please advise where the temporary water and temporary power hook up locations are.

Contractor to coordinate with Power Company for temporary hook-up. Contractor is responsible for water.

19. Per General Demolition Note #3, no water shall be used during cutting of concrete walls, however, it was stated during the site visit that water could be used for dust control. Can water be used when saw cutting the concrete wall?

The intent is to cut the wall without the use of water. If water must be used, contractor must provide reason and a mitigation plan to contain water and keep it from affecting critical equipment in the basement.

20. Per General Demolition Note C on sheet A101, a jackhammer can be used for the topping slab removal. Per Note 4 on sheet S100 regarding the interior concrete wall removal, use of jackhammers is not permitted. Does this mean that a jackhammer can be used for the topping slab removal but not for the wall removal? Please clarify.

A jackhammer may be used on the wall for selective demo as needed. The intent is for the wall to be chain/saw cut.

21. Will the contractor be allowed to use existing electrical outlets for small tools?

Building Service power can be used for construction tools. An existing Building Service panel in Room 1051A (CBI Lab) is available to power construction tools. Contractor shall coordinated with the COR in advance.

22. Detail 3 on sheet A651 shows cement board in mechanical room where epoxy flooring is to be installed. Is cement board to be installed floor to ceiling in this room?

The scope of the structural steel for this project is limited to the work associated with overhead door entrance, and there are very few AISC certified erectors and fabricators in the south half of Florida. Can the AISC certified fabricator and erector requirement be removed?

The certified fabricator and erector requirements shall be removed, but the shop drawings, welder certifications, and quality control requirements will not be removed.

29. The threshold detail 3/A611 and the details on sheet A651, suggest that an epoxy floor be placed in room 106 with the pitch from 2” to the drain completely in epoxy materials.

Will it be acceptable to extend the concrete topping slab with slope into room 106 and place an 1/8” minimum epoxy coating over the topping slab?

The floor in room 106 will be sloped with a topping that is separate from the self-levelling topping used for the rest of the space. The sloped floor will be installed after the self-leveling floor, equipment pad, and pipes have been installed. The edges of the sloped floor will be finished to match the self levelling toping around the room. The epoxy coatings will be installed on the sloped surface of the topping.
