To support developing 30% PS&E for the project, we’re submitting our findings and pavement recommendations for the project NP-NATR 3O19, 3P24. The project site is located along the Natchez Trace Parkway in Madison County, MS. The project consists of preservation for 8.31 miles of the Mainline Parkway from RIP Milepost 111.29 to
102.98 (Mainline Mile Marker 110.1 to 101.7). The project includes adjacent ramps and parking. Please note that upon completion of further analyses, the pavement recommendations are subject to change.
PROJECT ROUTES
• Mainline Parkway (NPS Route 0001C)
• U.S. 51 Access Road (NPS Route 131)
• Craft Center Parking (NPS Route 927)
• Old Canton / Airport Access Road A (NPS Route 132A)
• SR 123 Airport Access Road B (NPS Route 0132B)
• Brashears Access Road and Parking (NPS Route 191 & 928),
• Reservoir Overlook / Lakeview Access Road and Parking (NPS Routes 192 & 929)
• Boyd Mounds Access Road and Parking (NPS Routes 193 & 930)
• West Florida Boundary Access Road and Parking (Routes 194 & 931)
The first 7 miles of the project section from RIP MP 111.29 to 104.3 is in mostly good condition with primarily low severity and some moderate severity longitudinal cracking and block cracking. There is a 100ft area of settlement located near MP 110. The last 1.3 miles of the project from RIP MP 104.3 to 102.98 shows an increased level of distress.
There is moderate longitudinal and transverse (block) cracking with some high severity longitudinal and fatigue cracking in spots. From RIP MP 103.3 to 103.05 there is an existing wedge and level.
Access roads and parking areas range from fair to poor condition. Some access roads have sections of high severity longitudinal and fatigue cracking along with rutting and distortion. These distresses are indicative of subsurface structural issues. The long term repair in these locations would require reconstruction, however this is likely cost prohibitive and beyond the scope of this project. Therefore, a wedge and level course is being recommended in lieu of spot repairs for these pavement sections. Performing a wedge and level would serve as a temporary improvement, however expectations of a wedge and level should include the understanding that this will not address the underlying subgrade issues resulting in the distresses. Therefore it should be expected that distresses may reflect back through at these spot locations.
We are recommending an asphalt concrete (AC) overlay according to the minimum requirements laid out below in Table 1. Taper milling will be required in parking areas and ramps within 6 feet of curbs and gutters in order to maintain reveal and ensure proper drainage. In addition, approximately 1200 tons of Wedge and Level should be included as required and approved by the CO. There is an area near RIP MP 105.1 of about 220ft that was identified during scoping as requiring widening because it is being used as a
