Summary TS State of Maine was originally built as the USNS Tanner with two separate fire detection systems installed from different companies: Wormald (accommodation spaces), and Pyrotronics (Engineering/storage spaces). In 1997, the ship was converted to serve as the TS State of Maine.
Immediately following that conversion, its fire detection system was modified in order to provide a single, centralized monitoring system using an Ansul IQ301 Addressable Control Panel, which interfaced with the existing smoke & heat detectors, pull stations, alarm sirens, bells, strobes, etc via a number of addressable monitor and control modules. An Ansul LCD80 annunciator (remote monitor panel) and motor bell were also installed in the “Castine Quarterdeck.” Remote panels at the main deck gangway stations were removed. In early 2019, an additional two LCD2-80 remote annunciators (with motor bells) were installed in the EOS and Starboard Deck Locker 01-96-1, and the Castine QD annunciator was upgraded.
ElectroTechnical Services, LLC was tasked with surveying and documenting existing equipment, components, wiring, and drawings, but was not responsible for any engineering or modifications to the system.
The attached drawings prepared by ETS, LLC (Revision #0, 10 May 2019) reflect the current configuration of the ship's fire detection system as surveyed Spring 2019, and may contain inaccuracies. ETS assumes no responsibility for compliance with ABS, USCG, or other applicable regulations.
Attachments include original NAVSEA drawings, component manuals, and a survey of system components performed by ETS, LLC in March 2017.

System Notes Solid copper wire and wire nuts have been used within the fire detection system enclosures on the Bridge and in the Chart Room. While typically used in buildings, these are not appropriate for marine use.
There are three PCBs in the former Pyrotronics enclosure with a number of relays driven from an NAC output from the Ansul panel (via the General Alarm Relay). It appears that these relays originally served to interface with the ship’s Alarm and Monitoring system, to provide notice of fire/smoke detected in the engineering and storage spaces. The relevant electrical cable is still connected to PLC input modules in the Alarm and Monitoring system RIO-1 cabinet (main deck electrical room 1-88-0), however, these wire pairs are each jumped together to always provide logic “1” to each of the PLC inputs, and it is not known if there is any associated logic in the current system. Only one relay (#9) is still electrically in circuit, connected to cable C-SM1A, which is believed to operate the motor bell on the bridge.
The four Notifier FCM-1 control modules in the Pyrotronics cabinet operate most of the NAC devices on the ship, and are powered from an auxiliary power supply in the former Pyrotronics cabinet. Connected to these modules are two “End of Line Relays,” though their intended function is unknown, and as wired, do not appear to serve any particular purpose.
System Modifications, Early 2019:
As part of the 2018 Pierside Repair Package (Contractor: 3MC Mobile and Mechanical Repair, LLC), additional annunciators and motor bells were installed in the EOS and 01 starboard deck locker 01-96-1. The annunciators are powered from the existing Ansul panel, while a new auxiliary power supply was installed to power/operate the motor bells. This PS includes an FCM-1 control module with SLC address #27; it is assumed that a program addition must have been made to the Ansul system, but this has not been verified. A new junction box is located in the main deck overhead at approximately 1-96-1.
