About this file

This is a Market Survey Announcement issued by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for an industrial resistance spot welder.

The FAA William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace (WJHTCAA) seeks to procure one (1) new industrial resistance spot welder meeting specified requirements. The equipment must have a footprint not exceeding 96" L x 36" W x 96" H with minimum 24" throat depth. Performance specifications include AWS D17.2 compliance, 50% duty cycle capability when spot welding 0.063" aluminum, variable welding power, operation on 480VAC/3ph/60 Hz utility power, and maximum capability to weld 0.250" combined aluminum thickness or minimum single-sheet thickness of 0.019" (26ga) aluminum. The welder must accommodate five material types: 5052-H32 aluminum, 6061-T6 aluminum, 316 stainless steel, 308 stainless steel, and A1008 cold rolled steel. Required operational features include electric foot switch actuation, digital microprocessor controller with computer-controlled welding, weld log reporting with programmable schedules, 5RW electrodes (1-1/4" diameter), and two-stage foot switch safety activation. Equipment must be new, in current production, supplied by an OEM authorized distributor, and include one basic consumables kit and two operation/maintenance manuals. Delivery must occur within 180 days of award on FOB Destination basis with all shipping costs included; no advance payments accepted. Payment terms are Net 30 after full delivery, inspection, and government acceptance. One day of on-site training for Metal Shop employees and a minimum one-year commercial warranty covering parts and labor are required. Responses must be submitted by Friday, November 20, 2026, at 2:00 PM EST to Kenneth Hitchens, Contracting Officer, AAQ-650 at Ken.Hitchens@faa.gov. Questions are due by Friday, November 13, 2026, at 12:00 PM EST. NAICS code is 333992 (Welding and Soldering Equipment), and respondents must be registered in SAM. This announcement is not a binding commitment and does not constitute a Screening Information Request or Request for Proposal.

This market survey is for a requirement to manufacture one (1) Industrial Resistance Spot Welder for the Federal Aviation Administration and will enable the FAA to review responses that are current and that will assist with the acquisition planning.

2. North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Code

The NAICS Code for this procurement is 333992 Welding and Soldering Equipment.

3. Scope of Work

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace (WJHTCAA) requires the procurement of (1) industrial resistance spot welder to support specialized enclosures and testing equipment for the agency.

The baseline for this requirement is a Brand Name or equal machine that meets or exceeds all the salient characteristics defined below:

-Form and Physical Dimensions

• Geometric Footprint: Must be confined to a 96”/36”/96” (L/W/H) footprint.

• Throat Depth: Must have a minimum throat depth of 24”.

-Power and Performance Capacity

• AWS D17.2 Welding Performance: must be AWS D17.2 compliant.

• Transformer Output: Must be capable to provide a 50% duty cycle when spot welding 0.063”

Aluminum (total two-sheet 0.125” combined thickness).

• Welding Variability: Must be capable of variable welding power.

• Facility Power Compatibility: Must operate on 480VAC/3ph/60 Hz utility power.

• Maximum Welding Capability: Must be capable of welding a total combined material thickness of

0.250” Aluminum (equal 0.125” thick sheets).

• Minimum Welding Capability: Must be capable of welding a total single-sheet thickness of 0.019” (26ga) Aluminum.

• Material Capability: Must be capable of welding the following materials

-5052-H32 Aluminum -6061-T6 Aluminum -316 Stainless Steel -308 Stainless Steel -A1008 Cold Rolled Steel

-Operational Features:

• Actuation: Must feature an electric foot switch for hands-free actuation.

• Computer Controlled Welding: Must include a digital microprocessor controller (Ex: Weld computer controller) configured to provide computer-controlled welding control.

• Weld Log Reporting: Must include a programmable digital microprocessor controller capable of storing distinct weld schedules (controlling squeeze, weld, hold, and of times, at a minimum) to be provided as a report-output.

• Electrode Type: Must include a 5RW electrode, or an electrode of equivalent performance.

• Electrode Size: Must include an electrode diameter of 1-1/4” or of equivalent performance.

-Safety Features

• Foot Switch Activation: Must include a two-stage foot switch (stage 1 clamps without power, stage 2 initiates weld) to prevent pinch-point injuries.

-Condition of Equipment:

• All equipment must be new, in current production, and supplied by an Original Equipment

Manufacturer (OEM) authorized distributor. Refurbished or grey market equipment will not be accepted.
