C.3. WORK SITE REQUIREMENTS.
a. General. The Contractor acknowledges that he/she has satisfied himself/herself as to the nature and location of the work, the general and local conditions, including but not restricted to those bearing upon transportation, disposal, handling, and storage of materials, availability of labor, water, electric power, roads, uncertainties of weather or similar physical conditions at the site, the conformation and conditions of the ground and structures, and the character of equipment and facilities needed preliminary to and during prosecution of the work. The Contractor further acknowledges that he/she has satisfied himself/herself as to the character, quality and quantity of surface and subsurface materials or interference from existing structures or related facilities to be encountered insofar as this information is reasonably ascertainable from an inspection of the site as well as from information presented by the contract and reference drawings and these specifications. If the Contractor fails to properly acquaint himself/herself with the available information and existing work site conditions, he/she will not be relieved from responsibility for properly estimating the cost of successfully performing the work. The
Contractor will be able to start mobilizing materials and equipment to the site to locations as approved by the
Corporation after receiving the Notice to Proceed however, he/she will not be able to place anything adjacent to the lock walls until the lock has been turned over to the Contractor or has been given permission by the
Corporation.
b. Utilities.
1. Air. The Contractor shall be responsible for providing and maintaining all compressed air required for the performance of the work. The Contractor's portable air compressor(s) shall be located on the lock wall in areas to be approved by the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR).
2. Electricity. The Corporation will provide the Contractor with up to two load centers which will be located on top of the lock walls or in the upstream sill area near the upstream miter gate at a location agreed upon by the Contractor and COR. The load centers will provide the Contractor with 60 amps of 208/120-volt power, with 3-phase capability. All conductors, lights and outlets from there shall be provided by the Contractor. The
Contractor shall provide any additional power required at his/her own expense. Temporary wiring and extension cords shall be properly sized and conform to applicable provisions of OSHA and the National Electrical Code.
c. Potable Water. Any potable water required shall be provided by the Contractor at his/her own expense.
d. Sanitation. The Contractor shall provide chemical toilets within his/her work area which shall comply fully with the New York State Department of Health Standards. The capacity of the toilets shall be sufficient to provide for the needs of the Contractor’s people and all waste material from the toilets shall be disposed of away from the site. The Contractor shall be responsible for keeping his/her work areas clean of refuse of any kind and shall dispose of all refuse off the site.
e. Parking Areas. The Contractor and his/her work crews shall park their vehicles in areas designated by the COR. Vehicles required to transport equipment and materials to and/or from the work site shall not be parked at the work site for long periods of time without prior approval of the COR.
f. Work Area. The work site required by this contract is the upstream end of Eisenhower Lock, more specifically the vertical lift gate recess at the bottom of Eisenhower Lock. This recess is formed by abutting surfaces of the miter gate sill upstream face, and the north and south lock walls at Monoliths N45 and S12 respectively from station 60+00A to 56+00A.
g. Restricted Areas. The Contractor will be required to confine his/her operations to the work area, as designated in the previous subparagraph. The access roads, parking areas and Corporation buildings shall be kept free of the Contractor’s personnel, materials and equipment. When necessary for the Contractor’s personnel, materials, or equipment to occupy these restricted areas, the Contractor shall notify the COR to coordinate this with Corporation operations. The Contractor’s personnel must not drive vehicles or equipment over culvert valve gratings located on the lock walls nor set up cranes on recess covers because they are not designed for these loads.
The locations of the gratings and recess covers are shown on the reference drawing 326-C-20/130 “Frames and
Covers”. The Contractor must take necessary measures to protect existing gratings and covers and will be responsible for repairs or replacement of such for any damaged by the Contractor.
h. Existing Conditions and/or Existing Features. The attached photographs show the general condition of the vertical lift gate recess in which the work is to be done. Eisenhower Lock will not be covered thus the
Contractor must provide any heating and weather protection that is necessary for their work. Although the exact timing is subject to circumstances beyond the Corporation's control, by on or around January 11, 2022, stoplogs will have been installed at each end of Eisenhower Lock and the lock will have been dewatered to elevation 151 feet. Note that there is the 4” diameter drainpipe that drains the vertical lift gate pit to the lock chamber. That pipe invert is at 150 feet. GLS maintains water level of about 151 feet in the chamber. However, GLS can temporarily dewater the chamber to a low enough elevation to allow the Contractor to plug the drainage pipe to prevent water backflowing from the chamber into the vertical lift gate pit. The Contractor will be responsible for further dewatering of the vertical lift gate pit to complete work and shall remove the plug after the successful completion of their work prior to GLS flooding the lock back. This work requires advance coordination by the
Contractor and in a timely manner after GLS dewaters the chamber to approximately 151 feet in order to avoid freezing conditions that would inhibit ability to plug the drainpipe.
i. Snow Removal. GLS will provide snowplowing and sanding for general roadway access near the work site and in limited parking areas however, it must be expected that at times of sudden, unpredictable and/or heavy snowstorms, the snow removal may be delayed. Any additional snow removal or sanding as deemed necessary by the Contractor to maintain his/her work area and schedule will be by and at the expense of the Contractor.
j. Inspection. The Contractor's work will be inspected by the COR and/or the COR’s designee. The COR and/or the COR’s designee will have the authority to reject work not conforming to the specifications or contract drawings however, the Contracting Officer will have the ultimate authority for project acceptance. It is the
Contractor's responsibility to ensure that all work conforms to the contract documents. The Contractor will also be responsible for providing access to all work to the COR and/or the COR’s designee as required for inspection of the work. If the COR, COR’s designee or Corporation health and safety representative determine that any of the Contractor’s work practices are not conforming to Corporation and OSHA health and safety regulations, they shall immediately notify the Contractor and document it. If the deficiency is not corrected in a timely manner or presents an imminent danger, the COR, COR’s designee or Corporation health and safety representative will have the authority to stop the work, but in that case, they must notify the Contracting Officer and COR within one (1) hour of such occurrence.
C.4. LAYOUT OF WORK.
The Contractor shall furnish, at his/her own expense, all stakes, templates, platforms, equipment, or other guides as may be required in laying out any part of the work. The Contractor will be held responsible for the execution of the work to such lines and grades as may be established or indicated by the COR. It shall be the responsibility of the Contractor to maintain and preserve all controls established by the COR until authorized to remove them.
All elevations on the contract and reference drawings are based on the 1935 United States Lake Survey (USLS)
Datum or other datum if noted otherwise on an individual drawing.
C.5. CORPORATION AND CONTRACTOR-FURNISHED MATERIALS.
The Contractor shall furnish all materials for the satisfactory completion of this contract. All materials shall be of the type and quality described in the Technical Provisions and contract documents.
C.6. PLANT.
The Contractor shall furnish all plant. The Contractor-furnished plant shall be in satisfactory operating condition and capable of safely and efficiently performing the work. The plant shall be subject to the inspection of the COR at all times. The Contractor shall indicate the minimum plant which he/she agrees to place on the job in the
"Statement of Plant" section. The listing of such equipment is not to be construed as an agreement on the part of the Corporation that the equipment is adequate for the performance of the work.
C.7. ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION.
a. General. For the purpose of this specification, environment protection is defined as the retention of the environment in its natural state to the greatest possible extent during project construction and the enhancement of the natural appearance in its final condition. Environment protection requires consideration of air, water, and land and involves noise, solid waste management, and management of radiant energy and radioactive materials, as well as other pollutants. In order to prevent and to provide for abatement and control of any environmental pollution arising from the construction activities in the performance of this contract, the Contractor and his/her subcontractors shall identify and comply with all Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations concerning environmental pollution control and abatement. Any non-compliance shall be immediately corrected, and the
Contracting Officer notified.
b. Notification. The Contracting Officer or her representative will notify the Contractor of any noncompliance detected by the Corporation with the Federal, State or Local laws or regulations. Such notice, when delivered to the Contractor or his/her authorized representative at the site of the work, shall be deemed sufficient for the purpose. The Contractor shall, aft er receipt of such notice, immediately inform the COR of the proposed corrective action and take such action as may be approved. If the Contractor fails or refuses to comply promptly, the Contracting Officer may issue an order stopping all or part of the work until satisfactory corrective action has been taken. No part of the time lost due to any such stop order shall be made the subject of a claim for extension of time or for excess costs or damages by the Contractor. If the Contractor does not correct any non-compliances in a timely manner, the Corporation may do so at the expense of the Contractor.
c. Protection of Land Resources. The land resources within the project boundaries and outside the limits of permanent work performed under this contract shall be preserved in their present condition or be restored to a condition after completion of construction that will appear to be natural and not detract from the appearance of the project. The Contractor shall confine his/her construction activities to areas defined by the plans and specifications.
d. Protection of Water Resources. The Contractor shall not pollute surface or underground waters with fuels, oils, greases, bitumens, calcium chloride, acids, insecticides, herbicides, or other harmful materials.
C.8. SITE VISIT.
Prospective bidders are expected to visit the work site prior to entering a bid to determine the extent of work required. Certain portions of the work cannot be seen, since the lock is in service, however, much of the work area and the general conditions of the work site will be visible. Some representative photographs of the work areas in a dewatered condition are furnished in Section J. These photographs give a general idea of working conditions. Failure to visit the work site prior to entering a bid will not relieve the successful bidder of the responsibility for the completion of the intended work. A site visit will be conducted at 10:00
AM (ET) on Wednesday, September 1, 2021. Arrangements for site visits must be made with the Office of
Engineering and Maintenance, phone 315-764-3240 at least three business days in advance so that any requirements to enter GLS property can be conveyed to and followed by the attendee. Any expenses involved in site inspection and visits will be borne by the attendee.
C.9. DISPOSAL OF SPOIL.
Concrete debris, sand, gravel, stones, rubble and sediment mucked out by the Contractor in the course of performing the work may be spoiled at a GLS site north of Eisenhower Lock. Unused fresh concrete and concrete truck washings may also be disposed at the above GLS site. All other materials (trash, scrap metal, plastic, wood scraps, etc.) shall be removed from the work site by the Contractor and disposed of at his/her own expense in accordance with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation regulations. The Contractor must provide manifests to the COR of all materials to be disposed of, or if a manifest is not required then provide estimated quantities by weight and volume.
C.10. DISPOSAL BY BURNING.
Burning will not be permitted.
C.11. USE OF EXPLOSIVES.
Blasting will not be permitted.
C.12. SAFETY.
The Contractor shall be responsible for performing all work in accordance with applicable GLS and Occupational
Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Regulations. GLS has implemented health and safety requirements as a result of the disease commonly referred to as COVID-19. The Contractor must abide by these requirements while working at GLS facilities. Custom built work platforms and scaffolding systems, and anchoring plans and systems for same shall bear the stamp of a New York State licensed professional engineer. Scaffolds, work platforms, stairways, bracing and all other weight and load bearing fixtures that are to be secured to the lock walls shall be anchored in sound concrete using hardware that is deemed by the manufacturer as suitable for the purpose.
Anchors shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Load tests shall be performed on all anchors as recommended by the manufacturer or a New York State licensed professional engineer. The
Contractor shall be responsible for all load tests and for providing the reports to the COR. Upon completion of the project, the Contractor shall remove all anchor hardware and patch the areas to the satisfaction of the COR.
The Contractor shall control slip and trip hazards such as ice accumulations and clutter from poor housekeeping.
Sand or other suitable de-icing agents shall be used as necessary and as far as possible, water shall not be run onto trafficked surfaces where it can freeze and cause a slip hazard. The Contractor shall verbally report any accidents or injuries immediately to the COR with a written report to the Contracting Officer with copies to the COR to follow within twenty-four (24) hours.
C.13. WAGE RATES.
a. In accordance with the requirements of Clause (a), Davis Bacon Act, (40 U.S.C. 276 a-7), see Part II, Section I, General Provisions, Clause 52.222-6 of this contract, the minimum wages to be paid to laborers and mechanics on this project, as most recently determined by the Secretary of Labor to be prevailing for the corresponding classes of laborers and mechanics employed on projects of a character similar to the contract work in the pertinent locality, are as set forth in Attachment I. The complete determination is incorporated in the contract specifications regardless of whether the Contractor will employ all of the classes of laborers and mechanics listed.
b. Any class of laborers and mechanics not listed in Attachment I, which will be employed on this contract shall be classified or reclassified to conform to Attachment I, by mutual agreement between the Contractor and the class of labor concerned, subject to the prior approval of the Contracting Officer. In the event the interested parties cannot agree on the proper classification or reclassification of a particular class of laborers and mechanics to be used, the question, accompanied by the recommendation of the Contracting Officer, shall be referred to the
Secretary of Labor for final determination.
C.14. OTHER WORK.
At Eisenhower Lock, maintenance work by Corporation personnel and work by other contractors may be in progress concurrently with the work under this contract therefore, the work area may become congested. Only the Contractor's authorized personnel, subcontractors and suppliers shall be allowed to enter the work area. The
Contractor shall fully cooperate with the Corporation in all phases of the work and any disputes which may arise will immediately be brought to the attention of the Contracting Officer through the COR.

C.17. PREPARATION OF REPAIR AREAS
a. General. Concrete repairs shall be performed on all areas indicated on the contract drawings and on those that are discovered after the work begins. Before repair work begins, the Contractor shall muck out the recess down to elevation 146.5 as needed, to remove accumulations of sand, silt, and concrete debris and to expose surfaces for inspection and additional repairs as necessary. After mucking is completed, GLS or a GLS designee will inspect the surfaces of the recess east wall and monoliths N45 and S12 (below elevation 202.5) that are exposed by the removal and identify any new repair areas. The concrete repairs themselves consist of, in order described, the removal of unsound concrete, squaring the edges at interface with sound concrete or joints, installing reinforcing and then installing new concrete.
b. Repair Preparation. The boundaries of each repair area will be defined by lift joints, monolith joints, structure edges or a line the Contractor will saw cut past in original smooth sound concrete, depending on the particular area. Saw cuts will be at least two (2) inches deep. Within the boundaries of each repair area, the
Contractor shall remove loose and weathered concrete from these areas as shown on the Contract Drawings and as directed by GLS personnel. The removal shall be carried to "sound concrete" as determined by the COR or designee. In general, “sound” concrete is defined as solid, clean, unweathered concrete, free from visible cracks, spalling, protruding loose aggregate or flaking. Continuous inspection will be done by GLS to notify the
Contractor when the removal has gone far enough. The maximum removal depth as shown on the Contract
Drawings is 18 inches. Even if the unsound concrete extends further back the removal shall be stopped at 18 inches. Handheld demolition tools and/or mechanical excavators shall be used. Care shall be taken during the saw cutting and chipping to avoid damaging any existing reinforcing and embedded pipes.
c. Embedded Items. Reinforcing steel may be encountered in the course of the work. If reinforcing steel is encountered, it shall not be cut, but shall be carefully cleaned and the concrete removed for a distance of at least two (2) inches around it so that it is surrounded by at least 2 inches of concrete. Also, a small brass pipe and a larger steel pipe embedded in the recess east wall as shown on the contract and reference drawings may be intersected by the repairs. Care shall be taken to avoid as far as possible damaging these pipes or any other embedded items that may be encountered. Any embedded items that are damaged beyond repair by the Contractor shall be replaced in kind with new Contractor-furnished items. Any pipes that are open to the chamber need to be dewatered and plugged with a temporary plug for the duration of the work as soon as they are uncovered to prevent freezing.
C.18. REINFORCING AND DOWEL STEEL
a. Steel. The reinforcing steel and dowels shall be of the sizes indicated and installed at the locations as shown on the contract drawings. All reinforcing steel shall be epoxy coated or galvanized. All dowels shall be embedded a minimum of sixteen (16) total depth or 16 inches into sound concrete whichever is greater, in holes with resin anchoring cartridges. If the removal is terminated at 18 inches and the concrete is still unsound, the embedment depth shall be established at 16 inches past the point where the sound concrete is reached in the drilling of the dowel embedment hole. For example, if the unsound concrete extends to 24 inches deep and 18 inches is removed, the embedment depth is 40 inches (24+16 inches). The sound concrete is established by physical observation or by the observation of a noticeable increase in the drilling effort. Alternative embedment depths may be acceptable per the resin manufacturer’s instructions, but shall be approved by the COR. All reinforcing steel shall be secured in place by the use of metal supports, spacers or ties, all with sufficient strength to hold the reinforcement in place during the concrete placement process. All reinforcing steel shall be free from dirt, oil, grease or other coating which may destroy or reduce its bond with the concrete, and the protective coating shall be in good condition.
b. Welding. Any welding required for the performance of the work shall be performed by welders currently certified in accordance with American Welding Society (AWS) Dl.l Structural Welding Code (for structural or plate steel) or D1.4 Structural Welding Code - Reinforcing Steel. Welding shall conform to the applicable provisions of the above codes and low-hydrogen E70XX filler metals shall be used where applicable.
c. Materials.
1. Reinforcing Steel. All reinforcing steel shall conform with ASTM Specification A615, latest edition, Grade 60 and shall be mill bent in accordance with standard methods. It shall receive the protective coating (epoxy or galvanizing) after all fabrication, although field cutting is permitted.

Ingredient Quantity (per cubic yard)
Portland Cement 705 lbs. (7.5 bags)
Water Quantity for a slump not to exceed 3 inches
(Approximately 30 gallons)
Air Entraining Agent Quantity to yield an air content of 4-8%
Fine Aggregate 1350 lbs
Coarse Aggregate 1620 lbs
Aggregate weights are based on saturated surface-dry conditions. Air entraining admixture shall be batched in solution in a portion of the mixing water. Do not use air-entraining cement since the air content cannot be controlled. The slump shall not exceed 3 inches. Trial mixes will be necessary to establish the required quantities of water and air entraining admixture. Results of the trial mixes and any adjusted proportions shall be submitted. In lieu of the above, New York State
Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Class D or F mixes are acceptable. Certifications of current season NYSDOT approval for mix and ingredients shall be submitted in that case.
b. Forming: Forms shall be watertight, true to line and grade and sufficiently rigid to prevent objectionable deformation under load. That portion of the form in contact with the concrete shall not be of a material which interferes with the setting of the concrete. Responsibility for the adequacy of forms shall rest with the Contractor. A sealed engineering design for formwork shall be submitted in accordance with Paragraph C-16 “Submittals”. A bonding agent shall be applied to all existing concrete surfaces against which new concrete is to be placed. Bolts and rods used for internal ties shall be so arranged, that when the forms are removed, metal will not be less than two (2) inches from any concrete surface. All forms shall be so constructed that they can be removed without damaging the concrete. All exposed joints, edges and external corners shall be chamfered. All forms shall provide insulation equivalent to one-half (1/2) inch of plywood. Forms for exposed surfaces shall be coated with a non-staining form release agent. The form release agent and any filler used for filling cracks shall not interfere with the set of the concrete nor be otherwise deleterious. After applying form release agent, surplus release agent on the form surfaces and on the reinforcing steel or other surfaces requiring bond with the concrete shall be removed. Forms shall not be removed for a minimum of seventy-two (72) hours. When conditions are such as to justify the requirement, forms will be required to remain in place for longer periods. Forms shall be removed in a manner which will prevent damage to the concrete.
c. Mixing: All ingredients shall be batched by weight with proper allowance for tares. Aggregates shall be free from ice, snow or frozen lumps. Mixers shall be capable of combining the materials into a uniform mixture and of discharging this mixture without segregation. The mixer drum shall revolve a minimum of twelve (12) revolutions after all ingredients have been added, and over-mixing and/or re-tempering shall be avoided. Aggregates shall be batched first, then the cement, then the small amount of water with the air entraining agent, and then finally the balance of the water as needed for the 3-inch maximum slump. Water addition shall be carefully watched to avoid going over the maximum slump. Nothing shall be added to the concrete to prevent freezing.
d. Placing: Place concrete within thirty (30) minutes after mixing is completed. Convey concrete from mixer to forms as rapidly as feasible, using methods that will prevent segregation or loss of ingredients. Place concrete without interruption to avoid cold joints. Consolidate all concrete with suitable vibrators supplemented by tamping as necessary. Concrete temperature at placing shall not be less than 50 degrees F or more than 70 degrees F.
e. Finishing: Defective concrete, voids, ridges and local bulging on all concrete surfaces exposed to the water shall be repaired immediately after removal of forms unless waived by the GLS. Voids left by the removal of tie rods or other fasteners shall be reamed and then filled with repair mortar or other approved patching material. Defective concrete shall be cut out and then repaired by placing new concrete that is secured with keys, dovetails or dowel anchors.
f. Curing: After concrete placement, maintain all concrete surfaces in a wet condition for as long as practical after which a suitable curing compound shall be applied to these surfaces. The curing compound shall be used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. The Contractor shall maintain the temperature of the air in contact with new concrete to a minimum of forty-five (45) degrees F and shall be responsible for monitoring the air temperature to ensure this temperature is maintained for a minimum of seventy-two (72) hours. Any supplemental heat furnished by the
Contractor shall be discontinued after the temperature requirement in the previous sentence has been satisfied and a minimum of twenty-four (24) hours prior to removal of the enclosure such that the fall in temperature at any point in the concrete will not exceed five (5) degrees F per hour or fifty (50) degrees F in twenty-four (24) hours. Following the removal of the temperature protection, the concrete should be permitted to dry prior to and during the period of gradual adjustment to ambient cold weather conditions.
c. Shotcrete:
a. General: This paragraph applies to concrete that is pneumatically projected at high velocity in accordance with the “dry” placement method where all ingredients are pneumatically conveyed dry to the nozzle for final mixing with water before projection onto the work surface. The shotcrete dry mix may be supplied as a prepackaged single component dry product ready for field application. Mixing and application shall be performed in accordance with American Concrete
Institute (ACI) Specification for Shotcrete 506.2. Highlights of this specification with other special requirements are presented below. Because of the large volume and critical schedule of this project, the Contractor shall submit certifications for at least two (2) certified nozzlemen, per sub-paragraph C.19.c.c below.
b. Submittals: Submit manufacturer’s product data and installation instructions for each material and ingredient used, and submit the mix design with proportions of all ingredients. Include manufacturer’s Material Safety Data Sheets as appropriate. Submit description of the plant to be used and provide copies of nozzlemen’s certifications.
c. Quality Assurance: The manufacturer of single-component dry mix product shall be a company with at least fifteen years of experience in the manufacturer and marketing of pre-packaged cementitious repair materials. The Contractor shall be experienced and qualified to perform the work and nozzlemen shall be certified in accordance with requirements of ACI CP-60 Craftsman
Work Book and the ACI 660 Shotcrete Nozzlemen Certification Committee. The Contractor shall ensure that at least two (2) qualified nozzlemen are available to perform shotcrete application, due to the limited schedule available to complete work. A test panel of at least 2-feet square by
8-inches deep shall be prepared by the Contractor at the site for each day of shotcrete placement
(at the Contractor’s expense). The test panels shall be cored and tested by an approved laboratory (at the Contractor’s expense) for visual examination for bond and consolidation and compressive strength determination. Pursuant to the test panel findings, the completed work may also be cored by GLS for evaluation of the in-place bond, consolidation and compressive strength. d. Delivery, Storage And Handling: Deliver prepackaged shotcrete materials and cements in original packaging, labeled with product identification, manufacturer, batch number and shelf life. Store all ingredients in a dry area. Protect from the weather, direct sunlight, rain and freezing. Handle packaged materials in accordance with manufacturer’s printed recommendations.
e. Materials: The shotcrete is a microsilica-fortified, air-entrained cement-based mixture of Portland cement, microsilica, air entrainment, pozzolans and graded aggregates. Coarse aggregates shall be no larger than 3/8” in size. The shotcrete shall comply with ASTM C 1480 Type FA. Grades
GU, SR, LP. Water-cement ratio of the completed mix shall be no greater than 0.40. 28-day
Compressive Strength shall be at least 5000 psi. Air content shall be 4 to 8%. To reduce dust, predampen pre-packaged shotcrete materials before they are conveyed to the nozzle. Instructions provided by the manufacturer regarding mixing and handling shall be followed. Use only potable water in shotcrete.
f. Surface Preparation: Prepare repair area in accordance with the contract drawings and paragraph
C. 20 “Preparation of Repair Areas”. Surfaces against which concrete is to be placed shall be saturated surface dry at the time of the placement. Comply with other surface preparation requirements of ACI 506.2, “Specification for Materials, Proportioning and Application of
Shotcrete”. Do not use bonding agents.
g. Grade and Alignment. The proper surface grade and alignment of the completed shotcrete shall be maintained by use of taut “ground” wires that are set to the original profile of the concrete surface. The shotcrete can then be carried to the ground wires. A sufficient number of wires shall be used to insure a square and even conformity to the original dimensions of the concrete. Ground wires shall also be set at corners to ensure that the reconstructed corner conforms to the original geometry and dimensions.
h. Application: Place shotcrete first into corners, recesses and other areas where rebound or overspray cannot escape easily. Hold the nozzle perpendicular to the receiving surface and move it in circles to improve consolidation and reduce rebound (separated aggregate that bounces or ricochets out of the placement). In corners, direct the nozzle at a 45-degree angle, or bisect the corner angle if different than 90 degrees. Rebound shall not be incorporated in the completed work. Apply the shotcrete in such a manner as to prevent sags and sloughing. Apply around reinforcing steel to completely encase it and have a free flow of material completely around the reinforcement so there are no voids. Front face of reinforcement shall remain clean during the encasement. Shotcrete shall not be deposited into standing or running water.
i. Weather Conditions: Shotcrete application shall not be done in windy conditions that cause separation of the mix. Shield from the wind or discontinue shotcrete placement until it is calmer.
The prevailing ambient temperature shall be at least 50 degrees F and rising. Surfaces against which shotcrete is applied shall not be below 40 degrees F, and shall be free of frost. Shotcrete materials shall be no less than 50 degrees F. or more than 100 degrees F, and surfaces against which shotcrete is applied shall be no greater than 100 degrees F. Other provisions of cold-or-hot-weather concrete placement and curing apply.
j. Finishing and Curing: Finish immediately after application with a steel trowel to a smooth surface, with care to prevent loosening of the bond. Cure at least three days in accordance with the provisions of described for “Conventional Cast-in-Place Concrete” in this statement of work.
