About this file

This document is a University of New Mexico (UNM) Proposed Sole Source Purchase Form for a scientific equipment procurement. The request, submitted by Melissa C. Sanchez from the Biology Department on 08/25/2025, is for an Applied Biosystems (ABS) SeqStudio Flex 8 genetic analyzer, with a total purchase amount of $101,070.45. The instrument is a one-time purchase intended to enhance the Molecular Biology Core facility's research capabilities, supporting diverse applications such as targeted sequencing, NGS confirmation, cell line authentication, and DNA methylation analysis.

The sole source justification is based on Applied Biosystems being the sole manufacturer of the SeqStudio Flex 8 Genetic Analyzer and offering a unique trade-in option for two older, non-functioning Sanger sequencing instruments. The procurement is supported by an internal UNM PERC grant and provides cost savings through the trade-in program. No alternative vendors were contacted, as they cannot provide the specific instrument or trade-in option. The purchase aims to replace outdated equipment and maintain continuity of critical sequencing and fragment analysis services for UNM's research initiatives.

Other Basis for Sole Source: Please describe below:

The SeqStudio Flex 8 Genetic Analyzer is the instrument proposed and awarded funding through the internal

UNM PERC grant.

III. SUPPLEMENTAL DETAILS. PLEASE PROVIDE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION AS

REQUESTED BELOW:

Describe in detail the unique capabilities of the proposed vendor’s goods/service and/or personnel performing the work and why this constitutes the only source. Focus on what is unique about the goods/service and why no other vendor could meet your needs.

Applied Biosystems (ABS) is the sole provider of the SeqStudio Flex 8 Genetic Analyzer and is additionally offering a discount through the trade-in of two older Sanger sequencing instruments currently housed in the Molecular Biology Core, which are in need of replacement.

Describe the due diligence made to locate other possible sources including communications with other universities, communications with similar providers, web searches, yellow page searches, review of advertisements and trade publications, etc.

List the other vendors who were contacted. Please describe the specs/qualifications/criteria that the other vendors were unable to satisfy.

Other vendors were not contacted, as they do not manufacture the instruments currently housed in the Molecular Biology Core and therefore cannot provide a trade-in option for the nonfunctioning units.
