About this file
This is a Proposed Sole Source Purchase Form from the University of New Mexico (UNM) Purchasing Department for a medical technology procurement. The document details a sole source acquisition of Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) intraocular lenses from RxSight for the Ophthalmology Department, with a contract value of $100,000 and a three-year term with potential renewals consistent with New Mexico Procurement Code. The procurement is specifically for a unique intraocular lens used during cataract surgery that allows lens power adjustments within the eye after the surgical procedure through precise UV light treatments.
The sole source justification is based on RxSight being the only manufacturer of an adjustable intraocular lens that can fine-tune a patient's prescription post-surgery. After investigating alternative vendors including Alcon, Bausch & Lomb, and Johnson & Johnson, UNM determined that these manufacturers offer only standard intraocular lenses without post-surgical adjustment capabilities. The document indicates that the Light Adjustable Lens represents a new standard of care, offering patients the potential for optimal glasses-free vision by correcting residual refractive errors that would typically require additional corrective eyewear with traditional, non-adjustable lenses.

Describe in detail the unique capabilities of the proposed vendor’s goods/service and/or personnel performing the work and why this constitutes the only source. Focus on what is unique about the goods/service and why no other vendor could meet your needs.
The Light Adjustable Lens is different from every other intraocular lens on the market. After surgery, the patient undergoes a series of 3-5 UV light treatments to the lens which fine-tune their refractive outcome to exactly what they need to function optimally. No other intraocular lens is adjustable after surgery. For all other lenses, if the patient ends up near-sighted or far-sighted or with residual astigmatism, they must wear glasses after surgery. With the Light Adjustable Lens, any residual refractive errors can be corrected for optimal glasses-free vision. For patients who are interested in this outcome, the Light Adjustable Lens is the only intraocular lens that can accomplish this. It is the new standard of care for optimal refractive outcomes after cataract surgery.
Describe the due diligence made to locate other possible sources including communications with other universities, communications with similar providers, web searches, yellow page searches, review of advertisements and trade publications, etc.
Extensive web search and discussions with all major intraocular lens manufacturers.
List the other vendors who were contacted. Please describe the specs/qualifications/criteria that the other vendors were unable to satisfy.
Alcon Bausch & Lomb Johnson & Johnson
These manufacturers all offer a range of intraocular lenses which are not adjustable after surgery.
