About this file

This is a specification document for exterior paving improvements as part of the King's Grant Pump Station Upgrades project managed by the Caln Township Municipal Authority in Chester County, Pennsylvania. The work includes temporary paving, permanent paving, and driveway restoration activities required to restore paved surfaces affected by construction operations. The project references Pennsylvania Department of Transportation standards and specifications (Publications 408, 27, 37, and 203) for all bituminous and concrete paving materials, aggregates, and work zone traffic control. Key execution requirements include daily temporary paving with coarse aggregate backfill to a minimum 2-inch compacted thickness using 5-ton trench rollers, maintenance of temporary paving within 24 hours of written notification, and a mandatory 30-day curing period between base/binder course installation and wearing course placement. Permanent paving requires 1-foot minimum cutbacks with straight joint lines, individual compaction of each course using appropriate equipment (5-ton rollers for base and binder courses, 10-ton rollers for wearing course), and matching of existing road profiles. The specification establishes strict tolerances including maximum 1/4-inch flatness variation measured with a 10-foot straight edge, compacted thickness within 1/4 inch of design specifications, and elevation variation not exceeding 1/2 inch.

Driveway restoration requirements vary by surface type, including 6-inch reinforced concrete for Portland cement surfaces, bituminous restoration in kind with minimum 1-1/2-inch wearing course over 6-inch aggregate base, 6-inch 2A stone backfill for earth driveways, and restoration in kind for stone or gravel surfaces. Brick and cobblestone driveways must be restored using like materials on 4-inch wet sand beds with matching pattern and spacing. The contractor must maintain all restored paving surfaces throughout the contract maintenance period to the satisfaction of the Resident Project Representative and relevant municipal and state road departments, restore any pavement markings in their former locations, and repair all existing paving damaged by contractor operations at contractor expense. Traffic control measures must comply with Section 01 55 26 requirements and obtain pertinent permits from PennDOT and local municipal agencies having jurisdiction.
