GUARD BOOTH SPECIFICATIONS

SCOPE

This specification covers the necessary requirements to design, manufacture and furnish (1) fully assembled and portable guard booth. The specification covers general requirements for a pre-engineered, fully assembled, completely wired and painted steel construction that meets UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant protection.

The UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant protection is to be in all wall area, from the finished ceiling height, down to finished floor height. The roof, fascia, overhand soffit, and floor are not required to be bullet resistant. Level 8 protection is designed to resist attack of (5) shots from a 150 grain 7.62 mm rifle lead core full metal copper jacket military ball (.30 caliber) at a velocity between 2750-3025 ft/sec. The guard booth will have the following features:

1 GENERAL

The Contract Solicitation must include the following pre-award submittal to ensure the (1) guard booth meet PSNS C/106 electrical equipment requirements, and C/1121 security requirements.

When the contractor submits a bid, descriptive literature shall be furnished in sufficient detail to show that the proposed design will meet these specifications.

Vendor submittals shall include brochures of the model being submitted, assembly sketches with critical dimensions, exterior and interior paint systems used, all electrical items make/model/part numbers provided, statements of compliance with specification, and performance statements with special attention to the key performance criteria stated herein.

PSNS C/106 and C/1121 concurrence is required prior to awarding contract.

1.1 Applicable Standards

1.1.1 Design primary and secondary structural members, connections and exterior covering materials for applicable loads and combination of loads in accordance with the 2021 International Building Code (IBC).

1.1.2 Structural Steel: Comply with the 2022 American Institute of Steel Constructor’s (AISC) “Specifications for the Design, Fabrication, and Erection of Structural Steel for Buildings” for design requirements and allowable stresses.

1.1.3 Welded Connections: Comply with the 2025 American Welding Society’s (AWS), “Standard Code for Arc and Gas Welding in Building Construction,” for welding procedures.

1.1.4 Assembly Drawings: Manufacturers must submit to the Purchaser the drawings necessary to supplement the specification and drawings.

1.1.5 Electrical Services: Must comply with the UL Solutions and 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC).

1.2 Quality Assurance

1.2.1 Manufacturer’s Qualifications: Provide pre-engineered, fully assembled steel guard booth manufactured by a firm experienced in manufacturing steel guard booth that are similar to those indicated for this project and have a record of successful in-service performance.

1.2.2 Design Criteria: Guard booth having equal performance characteristics with deviations from indicated dimensions and profiles may be considered, provided deviations do not change the design concept or intended performance. These performance characteristics include but are not limited to the following:

1.2.2.1 Bullet Resistance Criteria: Guard booth that do not meet the UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant protection are not acceptable.

2 PRODUCT

2.1 GENERAL

2.1.1 Guard booth shall be the product of a building manufacturer who must have been actively engaged in the fabrication of pre-engineered, fully assembled guard booth for a minimum of five years on a continuous basis. The term fully assembled used herein means a factory fabricated guard booth does not require assembly at end user site, that is shipped is fully wired, fully glazed, and thoroughly painted.

2.1.2 The minimum building inside dimensions are included under the heading Scope, paragraph 1 of this specification. The standard used by the manufacturer shall be equal to or greater than those indicated by the amount of the closest standard size thereto.

2.1.3 The unit will be operated in a marine heavy-duty industrial environment and shall be capable of continuous operation over an extended period of time with minimal maintenance and upkeep.

2.1.4 All necessary joint sealants, gasket materials, flashings, and other weather sealers shall be included for a weather tight installation.

2.1.5 The manufacturer’s UL Solutions Listed Labels shall be intact and legible.

2.1.6 Nothing contained in the specifications shall relieve the Contractor from complying with applicable Federal, state, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations, including the obtaining of licenses and permits that may be required for the Contractor or Subcontractor(s) to perform a particular function.

2.2 DESIGN CRITERIA

2.2.1 Loadings: The guard booth described herein shall be detailed for the dead load and the live loads specified under Scope, paragraph 1 of this specification, as well as the combination of these loads as set forth in the IBC.

2.2.2 Bullet Resistance: The guard booth must meet UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistance protection. Level 8 protection is designed to resist attack of (5) shots from a 150 grain 7.62 mm rifle lead core full metal copper jacket military ball (.30 caliber) at a velocity between 2750-3025 ft/sec.

2.3 COMPONENT

2.3.1 Frame: Unit to have frame members consist of 2” x 3” x 0.083” and 3” x 3” x 0.083” structural mechanical steel tubing, formed for accuracy.

2.3.2 Wall System: Unit to have 16ga. galvanized steel interiors wall, and exterior walls that meet UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant armor plate steel insulated to R-10. Wall panels to have an additional exterior layer of R-9.6 continuous insulation over the armor plate from floor height to soffit height encapsulated inside of the final exterior layer of 16ga. galvanized steel walls.

Total wall insulation is R-19.6.

2.3.3 Floor: Unit to have 12ga. galvanized steel plate floor covered with commercial black resilient textured 20” x 20” interlocking tiles and 4” high black base cove molding. Floor system shall be welded to a 3” x 3” x 0.083” galvanized steel tube frame and joists with welded in place C-Channel forklift pockets.

2.3.4 Roof: Unit to have all steel construction designed for exterior use. Roof to be constructed of internal steel framing with 16ga. galvanized steel roof deck welded to the framing. Roof deck to be fully weather sealed with a three part membrane coating with SRI index of 95 of greater. Roof is insulated to R-19 and will have an 8” fascia with a 3” overhang on three sides and a 4” overhang at the rear. Roof to drain to rear downspouts.

2.3.5 Ceiling: Unit to have steel ceiling mounted at 85” AFF.

2.3.6 Painting: All surfaces shall be painted in conformance with the manufacturer’s standard practices and good workmanship. Painting shall result in a highly wear-resistant finish, which guarantees continued protection to the surfaces covered against the specified environment under all service conditions.

2.3.7 Weather Proofing: All necessary joint sealants, gasket materials, flashings, and other weather sealers shall be included for a weather tight installation.

2.4 DOORS AND WINDOWS

2.4.1 Personnel Door Assembly: Unit to have a 3’ x 7’ commercial grade pre-engineered bullet resistant steel framed outswing door that meets or UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant protection. Door assembly includes door, frame and the following accessories: continuous stainless steel hinge, stainless steel mortise level lock door handle, and hydraulic closer.

2.4.2 Windows: Unit to have UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant protection rated steel window frame system (painted to match booth) with flush mounted welded corners. Unit shall have fixed windows on all sides, all windows glazed with UL 752 standards for Level 8 gray tinted laminated glass clad polycarbonate.

2.5 ACCESSORIES

2.5.1 Shelf: Unit to have (1) 20” deep full width shelf with 3” diameter cord access holes with grommets for drop down cords. Shelf to be mounted at 34” above finished floor (AFF) and to be 16ga. 304 stainless steel with #4 finish. Shelf to have a painted galvanized steel storage drawer mounted below. Shelf to be rated for a 250 lb load.

2.5.2 Gunports: Unit to have (4) 12” wide x 10” tall slide type gunports with quick release handle/lock meeting UL 752 standards. (1) gunport per wall.

2.6 ELECTRICAL: See Section 3 for electrical requirements. All electrical equipment must be UL Solutions approved.

2.6.1 Load Center: Unit to have the following:

2.6.1.1 (1) three wire, single phase, 12 pole, 125 amp rated, 120/240 volt load center surface mounted on the interior.

2.6.1.2 30 amp shore plug connector on exterior wall.

2.6.2 Outlets: Unit to have the following:

2.6.2.1 A total of (4) duplex outlets: (2) under the shelf, (1) on wall opposite the door, and (1) on the rear wall.

2.6.2.2 (2) single gang junction boxes for data/communications cables, each will have a ¾” conduit to the floor stub area.

2.6.3 Lights: Unit to have the following:

2.6.3.1 At least (1) interior 1’ x 4’ LED light recessed in a 16ga. galvanized steel ceiling painted to match the booth and mounted at 85” AFF. Light is controlled by an interior wall mounted switch.

2.6.3.2 (1) interior emergency light with a 90-minute battery backup feature. This emergency light is separate from the interior light under paragraph 2.6.3.1 of this specification.

2.6.3.3 (4) exterior dual head flood lights, one mounted on each corner of the roof area with interior wall mounted switch. One flood light per corner.

2.6.4 Air Conditioner: Unit to have (1) through-wall mounted air conditioner with 12,000 BTU cooling and 10,600 BTU heating at 230 volts and an interior wall mounted thermostat. HVAC exterior shroud to meet UL 752 standards for Level 8 bullet resistant protection.

3 ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1 GENERAL NOTES

3.1.1 All wiring and grounding of equipment will be in accordance with the latest NEC.

Phasing/color coding of phased circuits shall be A: Black, B: Red, C: Blue, Neutral: White, Ground: Green.

3.1.2 Use stranded copper, single conductor, 600VAC (MIN.), 90°C, type THHN, or THWN-2 wire for installation of power and alarm circuits in conduits.

3.1.3 All wiring to be a minimum # 12 copper in EMT and concealed wire to be in approved flex.

3.1.4 All electrical equipment will be UL Solutions listed and approved. Where specific material/ manufacturer are called out, it shall be used unless equivalent material specified by the contractor is approved by PSNS and documented in writing.

3.1.5 All circuit breakers provided shall be of the type that are capable of being locked out.

3.1.6 All circuit breakers will be industrial or high grade parts (ex Cutler Hammer BR type breaker).

3.1.7 All wiring and connections to equipment shall follow manufacture’s directions unless otherwise specified on the drawing.

3.1.8 All equipment shall be located such that it can be accessed and serviced (e.g.

36” clearance).

3.1.9 All circuits must carry an independent grounding conductor (conduit runs do not fulfill this requirement).

3.1.10 All circuits must have independent neutral conductors, no shared neutrals.

3.1.11 Adjacent light outlets/light groups will be supplied using different circuit breaker when more than one corresponding circuit is specified. Similarly, the same requirement applies to adjacent receptacles.

3.1.12 Each connection point will be labeled using floater (ex. Brady wire markers).

3.1.13 Support conduit per latest NEC. Use unistrut as required.

3.1.14 Weld tabs, shot or weld studs as required to install unistrut. Do not weld in structural restricted zones.

3.1.15 As much as possible, attach studs or weld supports to the flange and not the web of columns.

3.1.16 All exterior electrical components/boxes and equipment shall have a NEMA 3R or 4X rating or shall be approved for use in wet locations (i.e. IP65).

3.1.17 All interior electrical components/boxes and equipment shall have a NEMA 12, 3R or 4X rating and shall have non-yellow exterior parts.

3.1.18 All interior conduits shall be EMT unless otherwise specified. Use only rigid conduit on exterior of the enclosure.

3.1.19 All exterior conduit connections shall be made-up rain tight or shall have welded joints. All exterior threaded conduit fittings shall be sealed with 100% silicone caulk (clear or white in color) where O-rings or gaskets are not installed. All conduit bodies (i.e., LBs, pulling Ls, Tees, etc.) shall utilize gasket covers.

3.1.20 Exterior low points in horizontal conduit runs shall include a fitting that can be opened for draining any trapped water.

3.1.21 All conduit penetrations made in exterior electrical enclosures/boxes and equipment shall be made using watertight conduit hubs/connectors.

Penetrations shall be made in the bottom of exterior electrical enclosures/boxes and equipment whenever possible.

3.1.22 All GFCI receptacles will be installed using only line side connections. Thereby precluding an instance where a receptacle becomes GFCI protected by being fed from the load side terminals of an upstream GFCI receptacle on the same circuit.

Figures provided below are sample only to provide general layout/visual of guard booth to highlight features. Vendors shall provide drawing(s) of pre-engineered, fully assembled guard booth as required per Section 2 of this specification.
