About this file
This document is a University of New Mexico (UNM) Proposed Sole Source Purchase Form for the University of New Mexico Hospitals (UNMH) submitted on April 14, 2025, seeking to procure a Mako RIO Robotic Arm Interactive Orthopedic system from Mako Surgical Corp. The proposed purchase is for a robotic surgical system that assists surgeons during joint replacement procedures, with an approximate contract value of $582,000 and a two-year term. The sole source justification is based on the system's compatibility with the current Stryker systems standard of care at the UNMH location and its unique technological capabilities.
The proposed purchase offers several key benefits, including increased surgical accuracy, personalized surgical planning based on patient anatomy, minimally invasive approaches, and improved patient outcomes. The document highlights the Mako system's ability to enhance surgical precision through its robotic arm technology, with studies indicating improved early functional recovery and reduced hospital discharge times compared to conventional total knee arthroplasty methods. The sole source procurement is justified by the system's proprietary technology and its specific compatibility with existing hospital systems, with no alternative vendors identified as meeting the same technological and procedural requirements.
