Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse Construction Services for
Roof Replacement Project
Building Description: The Martin Luther King, Jr. Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse
(MLK Courthouse) is part of the “Federal Campus” in Newark, NJ, and fronts Walnut Street.
Construction of the five story building was completed in 1992. The roofing system is a combination of low slope and steep slope systems. The existing low slope roofing system is a gravel surfaced built-up roof system which was installed in approximately 2001. The steep slope roof systems are standing seam metal roof systems. Additionally, a significant amount of mechanical equipment, duct work, electrical equipment, conduit, roof drains, lightning protection components, penthouse skylights, security cameras and equipment, bird control netting, and other building systems are located on the roof.
Project Background: In 2014, the roof was experiencing numerous leaks. Roofing Resources, Inc. (RRI) was contracted by GSA to perform an inspection of the roof and prepare a condition assessment report. RRI identified potential sources of leaks, and recommended that the low slope roof system be replaced in its entirety. Subsequently, Gensler was contracted to complete design of the roof replacement project and furnish construction documents for this work. In addition to replacement of the low slope roofing system, the work of this project includes, but is not limited to, mechanical, electrical, and bird control netting work.
