Page 1 of

Page 1 of

1.0 BACKGROUND.

The Imaging departments throughout VISN 22 have been running Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS) for over twenty years. The PACS is a computer based medical imaging system that provides economical storage and convenient access to images from multiple modalities. Electronic images and reports are transmitted digitally via a PACS system in a series of computer servers and workstations that exist throughout the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers allowing, clinical staff and providers, to review and interpret images acquired through radiologists and imaging systems. The PACS system has become a critical tool in treating patients. The system is used twenty-four hours a day and the support for that system consist mainly of PACS Manager who typically works Monday through Friday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. The VA medical centers have moved to weekend clinics and extended radiologist coverage to handle the growth of patient appointments. The increased patient workload has forced the medical centers to increase treatment hours for the patient. VA has traditionally found it difficult to hire support personnel for the PACS system. Due to the lack of on call staff for weekends and after-hours support, the VA is seeking to train the radiology technologist staff to support PACS/informatics after hours and weekends.

2.0 SCOPE / OBJECTIVE.

The objective of this requirement is to provide training to radiology technologists throughout VISN 22.
