Performance Work Statement VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) 6900 North Pecos Road North Las Vegas, NV 89084
1. CONTRACT TITLE: A Better Way with Dental Plastic, Laboratory Services
2. BACKGROUND: There are many plastic items used in the dental operatory. In the dental chair, plastic is used to cover light handles, air and water syringe tips, the dental chair, and head rests. These areas are covered for infection control purposes, but then are thrown out after each patient use. This generates a lot of waste, and the use of virgin plastic manufacturing causes a lot of emissions that contributes to the climate crisis.
President Biden signed Executive Order 14057 on December 8, 2021. This is a plan that will create jobs for American workers to tackle the climate crisis. The government plans to transition to more sustainable supply chains by “reducing the carbon footprint of all federally purchased products and service to zero by 2050.” Working with the VA’s Center for Innovation, VA Innovators Network, the ultimate goal is that by making this dental plastic a better way, whether through using recycled plastic at a manufacturing plant that uses solar energy or using a better product like hemp that is renewable and uses less water, that the VA healthcare can be a leader in the Executive Order 14057 and the newly designed product will meet the Food and Drug Administration requirements for Class II medical device approval.
This will be accomplished by developing prototypes of the clear plastic sleeves that are used to cover the air/water syringe, handpieces, saliva ejectors and ultrasonic scalers. These prototypes will need to undergo ISO 10993 Biocompatibility, ASTM Resistance of Materials testing analysis in order to be considered a Class II medical device under the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and regulations.
The main goal would be to change all virgin plastic used in the dental operatory to better productions of the same product, whether with recycled plastic or a different more sustainable material.
