Demonstration that the Contractor’s Unique Qualifications or Nature of the Acquisition Requires the Use of the Authority Cited Above (applicability of authority): Northern Arizona VA Health Care System owns approximately 52 CareFusion MedPyxis stations that are used to allocate and dispense medication for in-patients. The systems are interfaced with Vista. The MedPyxis Stations are in the various clinical wards/units and serve as an extension of the main Pharmacy. The MedPyxis Stations provide the clinicians with everything they need to expeditiously care for patients. It is not reasonable to expect them to stop caring for patients to go down to the Pharmacy to obtain the needed medications. Life expectancy of these machines is 10 years and to date none have surpassed life expectancy. These supply stations are integral in aiding the clinicians in patient care.

There are no other vendors that are able to service Pyxis supply stations other than CareFusion.

Proprietary services include hard drives (software), door boards (circuit cards), latches, skate cards, power supply units within machines, updates, motherboards, cabinet hardware, and its interface with Vista. Finally, CareFusion Solutions, LLC is the only company capable of performing installation and maintenance on Pyxis® items. Any maintenance performed by a third-party vendor, other than our Field Service Technician Affiliates, would render null and void any existing warranty and be unsupported by CareFusion Solutions, LLC.
