About this file
This document is an Interior Signage Design Standards and Construction Documents guide for the Dallas VAMC Wayfinding & Signage project prepared by Wayfinding Associates for the VA North Texas Health Care System, dated October 23, 2019.
The document establishes comprehensive design and installation standards for interior signage across the Dallas VA Medical Center. It specifies four Helvetica typeface options (Regular, Bold, Bold 77 Condensed, and Regular 57 Condensed) as ADA/ABA compliant fonts, with guidance that typefaces must be commercially purchased by vendors rather than provided by the design consultant. The standards define over 40 symbol codes (parking, elevators by floor letter, restrooms, wayfinding arrows, hazard warnings, medical symbols, etc.) to be used in sign message schedules. Mount hardware specifications include 18 categories (A through R, plus variations) covering pressure-sensitive tape, magnetic, hook-and-loop, screw, pin, hooks, freestanding brackets, ceiling attachments, cable systems, blade signs, glass applications, and panel-mounted options. Eight location categories define positioning requirements, including ADA-compliant tactile sign placement specifications requiring 48-60 inches above finished floor for tactile character baselines, 18-inch x 18-inch clear floor spaces around tactile signs, and specific latch-side door positioning.
The standards document includes detailed installation height requirements with preferred overhead clearance at 84 inches and minimum at 80 inches, maximum tactile text baseline at 60 inches, minimum at 48 inches, and visual character baseline minimum at 40 inches. Sign type series (D1, D2, i-series, L-series, N-series, R-series, W-series, and others) are defined with color-coded header graphics varying by suffix letters (b, c, p, s, t, y) representing different building locations and departments. The guide covers directory signs, room identification plaques, threshold identifiers, elevator information signs, emergency exit signage, restroom identifiers, wayfinding directionals, warning and caution notices, restrictive access signage, vinyl graphics, custom displays, and dimensional letter applications. Special considerations address mental health inpatient spaces, restricted areas, medical gas zones, and accessibility features including SmartStrip status indicators and paper insert holders for dynamic messaging.
