STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENT

Airfuge Air-Driven Ultracentrifuge Equipment

1. General Objectives and Requirements

Overview The purpose of this project is to acquire and commission an additional Beckman Coulter Airfuge air-driven micro-ultracentrifuge, including required rotors and accessories, so that the KCVA laboratory can perform high-speed, small-volume ultracentrifugation for applications such as lipemic sample clarification, rapid sedimentation of biological samples, and electron microscopy sample preparation.

Background The KCVA laboratory requires a compact, benchtop ultracentrifuge capable of reaching very high rotational speeds while handling small sample volumes. The Beckman Coulter Airfuge is an air-driven micro-ultracentrifuge that can operate at very high speed and generate high relative centrifugal forces, using compressed air rather than a conventional motor-driven spindle. It supports a range of rotors covering small to moderate sample volumes and offers short acceleration and deceleration times suitable for rapid workflows.

Scope and methodology

• Procure one Beckman Coulter Airfuge air-driven micro-ultracentrifuge with agreed rotor set(s), air filtration assembly, and required accessories, matching the model currently in use at KCVA.

• Verify site readiness, including bench space, clearances, grounded electrical outlet, and clean compressed-air supply within the specified pressure and flow range.

• Install and connect the instrument, air filter, tubing, and fittings in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Perform startup and functional checks, including rotor acceleration/deceleration within expected ranges, time-delay operation, and proper stopping behavior.

• Provide operator training covering rotor selection, loading and balancing, timer and pressure settings, safety precautions, shutdown, and routine maintenance (e.g., stator pad and filter inspection).

• Document installation, configuration (rotors and accessories provided), initial operating procedures, and responsibilities for ongoing routine maintenance and safety, leveraging existing KCVA validation documentation where appropriate.

2. Tasks and Associated Deliverables

Equipment delivery and inspection

• Task: Receive the Airfuge unit, rotors, and accessories; inspect for shipping damage and verify contents against the packing list and the existing KCVA configuration.

• Deliverable: Receiving and inspection report, including serial numbers and configuration details.

Installation and setup

• Task: Position the instrument, install air filter, connect air lines, install brake pin and stator pad, and level the unit per manufacturer guidance.

• Deliverable: Installation record noting connections completed, leveling, and any deviations or issues.

Startup and functional verification

• Task: Conduct trial runs with a selected rotor to verify acceleration, running behavior, timer operation, stopping times, and absence of abnormal vibration or noise.

• Deliverable: Commissioning / functional test report with recorded run parameters and pass/fail outcomes.

Documentation handover

• Task: Compile and transfer relevant documents to the customer, including manuals, quick reference procedures, and maintenance/consumables list, and indicate alignment with current KCVA validation and SOP documents.

• Deliverable: Documentation package (physical or electronic) and a list of recommended spare parts and consumables.
