657-17-187JB, Tuckpoint and Repair Masonry, Various Buildings

The purpose of this amendment is to provide questions and answers, site visit record and extend the due date.

1. Questions and Answers received regarding this solicitation are provided herein.

2. The record of site visit attendees is provided.

3. The due date for responses to this solicitation is extended to 6 FEB 2018 at 9:00 am CST.

Kevin Knight 657-17-187JB Site Visit Questions 1-22-18

1. Sheet 1-A-100 has highlighted and bolded areas with measurements. Please clarify if all exterior masonry gets tuckpointed 100% as well as depth of tuckpointing. There are multiple masonry related specs, one clarifies ¾” and another clarifies ½”.

Refer to SPEC section 040531 - Masonry Tuckpointing – 3.1.A. This shall govern. Shall be ½”

1. Are there any elevation drawings available for this project. This site is not updated on Google Earth, so street view or zoomed views offer no assistance. No. Height of connecting corridor walls are approximately 10 FT.

1. Sheet 1-A-100 corridor wall measurements add up to 3,400 lf (+/-) of walls, however there are 60+ pilasters that project out 6’ to 7’ off the common wall. Are these also to be tuckpointed 100%, cleaned and sealed.

Yes.

1. I don’t believe there is roof replacement on this project. Please clarify that the tuckpointing starts at the top of roof termination flashings as well as are we to include re-caulking the top of all flashings and terminations.

Yes. All associated roof edges a top of the area being tuck pointed shall get new metal coping installed. Remove existing metal comping if applicable before installing new metal coping.

1. The mortar is exceptionally hard. Would it be possible for us to set up a site visit prior to bid to grind out 15-20 sf of area in a secluded spot. We will point it back if the project for some reason doesn’t move forward.

No more pre-bid sites visits will be allowed.

1. Project calls for metal copings to be replaced where they intersect brick. Can you clarify a footage for bid purpose. Also I noticed there is gravel above the corridor roofs. Are these copings gravel stops at some or all corridor locations. If so, are you still replacing them and can you provide a proposed replacement detail. No. Reference the scope of work drawings for footages. Approximate linear footage of gravel stops is 2310 LF.

1. In order to tuckpoint properly we will be cutting into the caulking on the perimeters of openings. We recommend to caulk all perimeters 100%, please clarify. Caulk all perimeters.

1. Same applies to the vertical masonry expansions which are a two piece custom V- Style copper joint. I believe we will damage them during the mortar joint removal process. Can these be replaced with backer rod and silicone sealant such as Dow 790. If they need to be replaced with copper can you provide a replacement detail for bid purpose. Yes. Backer rod with sealant.

1. Please clarify if Building 60 is 100% tuckpoint, caulk, clean and seal. The way I read Bid Item 1 is that this work is included and then the tuckpointing only of Building 60 is excluded from Bid Item 2, please clarify. Drawings say it is an alternate but Bid Item 1 appears to include it. Include cost for Bid Item 1 and Bid Alternate (Bldg. 60).

1. Building 60 has heavy stone copings. Both the brick and copings are showing extreme mold growth. I would recommend you include to 100% clean Building 60 brick and copings with a biological killing agent such as Prosoco ReKlaim prior to sealing the brick. Yes.

1. Per site visit I noticed Building 60 copings have de-bonded caulking over original mortar at stone to stone joints as well as exterior bed joints. I would recommend you re-caulk these as well as add weeps on 24” centers in the bed joints. I would also seal the copings with Prosoco Natural stone Treatment. Yes.

1. There is a flexible flashing above existing lintels on the corridor walls, however the lintels are showing rust. Please clarify if you want the exposed steel prepped and painted. (type of paint?) Yes. Reference the paint specifications.

1. Has the existing sealants been checked for asbestos. For bid purpose can we clarify no asbestos. No asbestos present.

1. Can you clarify if we can access all work areas from exterior sides of corridors. As well as are there any underground or hidden obstacles at Building 60 that would prohibit the use of mechanical lifts to perform work. Areas are all accessible. No hidden obstacles present.

1. Are there any areas that due to noise of grinding would need to be completed outside normal business hours. No. This project will be conducted during normal working hours.

1. There didn’t appear to be any high flow pedestrian areas associated with this scope. Are there any entries or areas we need to know about that will require special protection or completed outside normal business hours. No. This project will be conducted during normal working hours.

1. When do you anticipate starting this project. It would be advantageous to start the grinding during the cold months while everyone is primarily inside. As soon as the VA selects a respectable contractor.

1. On page 12 of the Solicitation, Factor 4 -Line 2 states that we must provide documentation from at least Two past projects in patient care areas that shows the contractor has been required to follow infection prevention and life safety measures required by a medical center/hospital. Considering this project is an exterior repair project, will this requirement still stand for potential bidders? Yes. Provide the following information listed in the solicitation.
