Statement of Work for Large Animal Kennels (18 ft2) Funded through VA Research

1.1 Purpose

The purpose of this Statement of Work (SOW) is to obtain ten (10) 15 ft2 freestanding stainless-steel kennels that will house large animals that will provide an optimal animal welfare environment, while also proving safer work practices for animal care staff. This additional housing will be used by multiple VA Research investigators for IACUC approved protocols.

The facility’s current large housing capability includes eight Mason 40ft2 chain link kennels, and five 15ft2 stainless steel free standing modular kennels (equipped with Edstrom automated watering system valves).

In order to optimize the dedicated large animal housing space, ten 18ft2 kennels have been approved for purchase via an awarded LAM grant. These ten additional kennels would provide space to socially house large animals.

1.2 Scope of Work

These ten additional kennels will have social housing capability via sliding center panels that include a self-storing sliding panel, it would provide up 180ft2 of housing space for the animal and optimize space in the rooms. The cages will have Edstrom automated watering system capability. Additionally, these kennels will have a raised floor surface with a front tilt section that can be levered up and locked in the tilt position to provide easy access to clean under the kennels. The floor also has a removable section constructed of high temperature polyethylene that can serve as a resting board. The flooring is made of Duradek panels with fine grit to provide stability for the animals and caretakers during cleaning. The front panels include a removeable swing door with a single hand operable door that can be unlatched from inside or outside the kennel. The panels are constructed of stainless steel 1”-1.5” diameter tubes and 16 gauge walls. The floor system is framed with a 1” tubular stainless frame and 18 gauge wall.

The vendor shall provide the following deliverables within 180 days from signed approval drawings, except for delays incurred due to drawing approvals and/or if requested changes affect quoted delivery times.

Deliverables to include:

-10 stainless steel freestanding, modular kennels (18ft2 each), with elevated floor panel, and sliding center panels that allow for social housing.

-5 Stainless steel automated watering system adjustable valves

-On site installation of kennels.

Salient Characteristics

(A) Functions to be performed;

Kennels serve as an essential solution for housing swine and sheep in an animal research facility setting. The primary function of these kennels is to provide a secure and comfortable living space for animals while ensuring their safety and overall well-being.

These kennels are designed to meet strict standards to provide a controlled environment for animal research as described in the Guide for the care and use of laboratory animals (8th edition). The kennels are also equipped to be compatible with automatic water systems and integrated feed systems to ensure animals have access to clean water and food.

The kennels are to be made of durable materials (such as stainless steel), making them easy to clean and sanitize regularly. Their design also allows animals to move freely, providing ample room for natural behaviors like nesting, rooting, and socializing.

(B) Performance required;

- Singular Kennels must have a floor area of at least 18 square feet in order to be compliance with housing restrictions for sheep (over 50 kg) and pig (over 100 kg) housing as defined in Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

-Kennels must be composed of high-grade stainless steel and other such durable materials, to withstand frequent cleaning and sanitation and not produce rust.

-Kennels must have social housing capability.

(C) Essential physical characteristics; Dimensions (if applicable)

· The kennels ought to have a floor area of at least 18 square feet (6ftx3ft).

· Kennels shall be constructed to have an interlocking inner panel that allows for modular design that can allow for custom combinations of cages as needed for various animal study groups and animal body weight sizes.

· The kennels shall allow for social housing, facilitated by a horizontal sliding center panel that can be opened with a stainless pull bar and two roller bearings. Horizontal sliding door shall be 5ft or less to enable animals the size of sheep and pigs to enter and exit.

· The sliding shall be self-storing, eliminating the need for removal or storage.

· The kennels shall be composed of stainless steel and feature a swing front door that can be unlatched with a single hand from either side of the door.

· The kennels shall incorporate automated water system quick connect valves, adjustable height drinking valves, and drain valves that can be seamlessly linked to a watering system.

· The kennels shall have a raised floor surface with a front tilt section that can be locked in the raised position to clean underneath the kennel flooring, without the need to lift and remove heavy steel floor grates manually.

· The kennel raise floor shall be made of Duradek panels with fine grit to provide stability for animals and caretakers in wet conditions.

· The rear section of the floor shall contain a detachable, solid, high-temperature polyethylene resting board.

· The rear section floor shall have the capability to tilt and lock into place for cleaning.

· All panels shall be built with tubing with 1”-1.5” diameters and 16 gauge walls, while the floor system should be framed with 1” tubing and 18G walls.
